Hey, I’m new to this group, I’m from NYS, where the gun safe act is throughout the entire state, banning the ownership of “assault weapons” or “weapons of war”.
I’m in my early 20s and I have limited experience with firearms. I’m very strict with muzzle control and trigger discipline but I lack a lot of general knowledge. Any pointers on basics? I’m also just generally concerned based on what the Biden administration has been saying. I’ve been considering buying an AR-15 or M4 but I’m not trying get it taken away in a gov buy back in a year.

First, welcome.

Second, someone will be along shortly with links or recommendation to trainers in your area. All trainers are not created equal. Be sure to get a bunch of recommendations to find one that’s your speed. Many are “tactical” many are “practical” and more than a few are absolute morons.

Welcome.

That right there is going to be a roll of the dice at this point.
If the 2 choices where selling to the gov or registering it it, which do you think is best? On one hand I’d like to be able to keep my firearm, but I really don’t want to be on a list lol

Welcome!! And yep, I think practical trumps tactical about every time. Embrace and enjoy the sport!

Welcome. Buy yourself an AR through the classifieds here and Uncle Sam won't ever know you have it.
Welcome. And just to be clear, what @SPST says is perfectly legal, without any permit, background check or registration as long as you are legal to have them (no felonies, domestic trouble, etc). Welcome to Free America. And dont vote Democrat for anything or you’ll lose your rights just like you did up there.

You probably should buy a shotgun, just racking it is enough.

The more people have them, the harder it is to say they are "unusual" and the easier it is to ban them.
Get one, or 5. Enjoy it. Learn to shoot it well. That's make it harder to take away too.

You will be on the list either way.

neither of those will be my choice. Beside, I don't own any guns, I just come here to read the articles.

If you are a resident of NC , and have a valid ID. Not a felon, You are legal to buy face to face without any other documentation. You do not have to provide any copy's of your ID either. So, if the person asks for that, cut and run.

He may not have been on here enough yet to pick up on the more sophisticated sarcasm that predominates here. If he sticks around long enough his gf will start to get annoyed at his newfound verbal skills and start to complain. Then he will know he’s one of us.

My old mom likes to say, “Don’t borrow trouble.” And what she means is, if the bad news isn’t a reality yet, don’t pretend like it is.

I don’t think anyone here can predict what the rest of this year will look like. Pursue what you think is smart, and let the debil take the hindmost.

Glad to have you. As flawed as they are, we still have the NRA and other legal avenues of resistance. I do think it would be reasonable to invest in an AR at this time. If they pass a law forcing registration then you can choose whether to comply, sell, it, or whatever. It's not like it becomes valueless if that happens. Considering your comments I wouldn't go the AR pistol route, keep it 16" or longer and you won't have to worry about any future legal complications re. AR pistols.

Buy an AR you know you like ... it might be your only one. But at least 5 ... 10 ... what you can magazines they don’t go bad. Then buy ammo when you find it ... don’t panic buy ... if you see it at a big box (Bass Pro, Cabelas, Academ, etc) pick up your limit ... watch for internet sales but watch shipping cost (if you can only buy 5 20 round boxes with $10 shipping it adds 10¢ per round to the cost). While you are searching for ammo buy extra parts (a bolt, spring kit, buffer spring, etc) to keep yours running down the line.

don't be a virgin and buy a complete rifle at pandemic pricing.
start off like a chad and build your own rifle from assorted parts.
You will be better off because you'll know YOUR rifle. Get an old pro to teach you and you'll know what to swap and when to swap it.
welcome

There’s probably enough guys here with spare parts they’d be willing to donate to get you well on your way to a solid build.

I’m in for a goody box if you want to go that route....

An AR15 is all round good platform for defense. It can be used out to a reasonable distance, e.g. 400 yards as well as close quarters. It is common and versatile with lots of parts and accessories. Overall, you would be well served by one, or multiple. Right now, you will pay elevated prices, but C’est la vie. I would recommend getting some training on its use.

For everyday carry, a concealable pistol is hard to beat and better than a sharp stick. Again, if you’re not familiar with them a good beginners course will help you 1,000 fold.

As the subject was mentioned above, there are AR pistols. Basically, the lower receiver was originally designated as a pistol or other and it was always configured as a pistol per ATF definition. That’s the short synopsis of a complex topic. Some people do carry the .223 caliber / 5.56 in a pistol format and conceal it legally under their CHP - concealed handgun permit.

If you’re new to the state, the CHP is probably where you want to start your process.

And Welcome.

Well if I learned anything from good ol Joe Biden, I just need to buy a double barrel and shoot both shots in the air, to scare off any intruders, I shouldn’t worry about giving my position away, or the fact I’m now dry, Joe said it works, so it must.... wait what...?? I’m under arrest? I can’t shoot openly in a residential area...? But Joe said....
