Last Friday morning I got a call from a lady asking about renting some oxygen. I was explaining about all of the documentation we would need to dispense O2, blah, blah, blah. Then she said that she wouldn't need it for very long, it was for some premature puppies.
Well, now she had my attention. She worked with a veterinarian but these were her dogs. The female had a puppy die before birth and she aborted the whole litter of four. One was dead, one died right after birth, a female was struggling, and a male was in a little better condition than the female. She had an incubator and was taking the pups home for the weekend. She was afraid the little girl would not make it. She said if she could get her to make it through the weekend she thought she would be able to make it.
I gave her an O2 cylinder, a regulator, and tubing to connect it to the incubator. She wanted to know the cost and I told her it was on me. I thought about these dogs all weekend. Monday morning I texted the lady and asked how the pups did over the weekend. She said they had a rough Friday night and Saturday morning. She had to give them O2 several times as their breathing was labored and they were turning purple. But Saturday afternoon they started improving. She said that she hadn't had to give them O2 since 6PM on Sunday. She said she was convinced that the O2 saved their lives.
Today, she returned the O2 cylinder and brought the puppies in to meet me. They are only 8 days old and not much bigger than a mouse. They are both eating well, bottle fed, and are having normal bowel movements. They are pretty active and crawling around and they had good color to them. She was very appreciative and she thinks I'm a hero.
She gave me a very nice card and a $50 gift card. So, next week the office will have lunch on me. And, she named the little male puppy Larry. Some days are just better than others.
Edited to add that they are French Bulldogs. I'm not a big fan of the breed and these are sold for big bucks.
