While at the range I was picking up steel cases with a magnet and attracted some “brass” cases. They were SIG head stamps. But the box didn’t mention steel cases. I scratched a case with my knife and revealed a color difference. Just a heads up if anyone encounters these. I snapped a picture of a box from the trash. I assume this was where the cases are from

What does the headstamp look like? Note the front difference. The top is "coated steel the bottom is legit brass case.

The difference is so subtle I couldn’t really say, I included a picture up top. But it was magnetic for sure. My concern was that if anyone tumbles brass with pins, that’d wear off fairly quick. I wouldn’t have thought SIG wouldn’t label packaging as such.

Look at the I in SIG it is the brass plated the I in the other has a sarif.

Wet tumbling will take the plating off. Chuck it.

I see it now! Thanks

There is one other common headstamp (PPU?) that occasionally makes some brass plated steel. My normal procedure for 9mm range pickup is to run a magnet over them.

Any chance this magnetic ammo is not genuine Sig and some counterfeit ammo?

I posted this back in May of 2021. I wonder if this will become more and more common?

"I went to the range today and cleaned up quite a bit of (other people's) pistol brass. When I got home I started to separate out the steel, Berdan primed stuff and ran a magnet over it. I was VERY surprised, to say the least, to see a bunch of "brass" hanging off the magnet! Turns out there were 31 rounds of this stuff in this batch. It has the appearance of brass both inside and out and is Boxer primed. All of it is head stamped GROM 9x19 PL.

I assumed it was brass plated steel but I am unfamiliar with such a product. I deprimed and resized several cases to see how much force was needed and I was again surprised when it sized with about the same effort as a brass case.

Anybody know anything about this stuff? I can't find anything useful online and I certainly don't need to mix it in with regular brass cases."

Didn’t we discuss this back in 2021. Grom is Polish ammo. They use the brass plating for better feeding.

This stuff shows up in odd places. Sig, LAX, Freedom Munitions etc….

If it resizes the same as brass what's the problem with it?

The font on the headstamp is not the same on the brass, I believe it is not genuine Sig and here is confirmation.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Sig Sauer.
We do not use steel casings for any of our ammo.
Hope this helps!
