Massad Ayoob - "Shoot to Kill" or "Shoot to Stop"

While I love Clint Smith and all his Clintisms but Ayoob’s words and advise will save your butt if you ever have saved your butt. Like he says it is fun to thump your chest and say stuff … but not if you are sitting in jail or at the defendant’s table. The old Teddy Roosevelt adage “Walk softly and carry a big stick” maybe should be modernized to “Walk and talk softly and carry a big stick”.

Back in the 1900s Colonel Jeff said......We always shoot to Stop the aggressor...NOW, if you introduce a 230 grain bullet to a person's chest, you may assume he will take it badly.

I'm old enough that there is Hardly anything that hasn't been Repeated in the shooting world. I like Mas, he wrote a glowing report about me and some guns that I had at the time, again, back in the 1900s [Combat Handguns October 1988]. This said, there's hardly anything new about this stance. Some. like this video, need repeating occasionally...this is one.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I remember reading an article he wrote several years ago that included “don’t shoot until you think they’re dead, shoot until they think they’re dead”.

Remember this one?

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey -

"Let there be no doubt: This individual got exactly what he deserved," Ivey said.

"And to those out there who might be foolish enough to ask why we shot him so many times, that answer is simple: Because evil can never be dead enough."

Sherriff Judd in Fla......Let the Thugs be warned, there are alot of good people in Florida, many of them carry guns..they will shoot you.....ALOT!

I used to make everyone read "In the Gravest Extreme", Mas's ground breaking book on the legal and tactical aspects of defensive shooting. You want to own a gun? Read this first.
I don't know if it's still in print, but it was foundational in developing my perspective on defensive shooting and the second fight for your life, the trial. It discusses how and when you do the first, (the shooting) affects the second (the trial).
My copy got worn out from loaning it to others.

If you find yourself in a shooting for defense situation , I will follow what a well know lawyer told me. Tell LE you do not feel good and you need to go to the hospital and call me on the way there.

I’m old enough to go with “chest pains” and shortness of breath … stress from “being attacked” caused it.

Good on you loaning it out! That book was still in print as of a few years ago. It's pretty great, but it was early in his career and it is outdated now in two ways. First, outdated in terms of its specific recommendations on equipment and such. Second, outdated in terms of Ayoob's ability to clearly communicate the legal matters. His more recent book Deadly Force is a better book than In the Gravest Extreme.

Sorry. Mas's voice (sounds like he's on qualudes, always has) puts me to sleep. I will shoot to stop the threat. I was trained to double tap.

I was trained that you stop shooting when the treat is eliminated and Billy is right, the body don’t take it well when you introduce a 230 grn piece of metal to it.
