We've been having one of those types of discussions on matches that would be tons of fun. Woods Walks are cool and the equivalent of an archery field shoot and they can be pretty cool. There's nothing like an N-SSA match and there's even a Victorian Rifle match that is shot primarily in the NE US. So to the latest idea, how about taking elements of black powder matches that are very popular and having a "Victorian Military" match? We were thinking maybe a "Sniper" Class with teams, shooter/spotter, using old school Whitworths and Enfields and the spotter limited to a 4x optic only, no bags or bipods, positions allowed, only rest would be a "chunk" or a log. Or maybe a "volley fire" at 100yd match. Target would be a 4ft square of drywall, competitors shoot as a squad, firing commands ready, aim, FIRE and you better be ready because the drywall target is only presented for 1 sec. Count the hits. Or maybe a squad match based on a famous battle like Cold Harbor. The targets could be a field of popper type targets at unknown distances. Hit as many as your squad can for 3min with musket fire.

Just a few ideas to start folks thinking. Something like this could be epic fun, especially if we could add an artillery component. Canister match anyone?

Love it.

If Victorian Rifle is currently limited to the NE (by enthusiasm rather than tribalism, I imagine), maybe some local matches might gain attendance if they had a SE/historical theme? I'm thinking something modeled after Cowpens or King's Mountain battles, maybe a woodswalk disguised as a skirmish, or squads engaging targets half-concealed behind trees.

Probably not practical for 100's of shooters! But fun & local (SE, within 1-day driving distance?) could rally attendance and (re)build interest in muzzleloading.

I think you're onto something. Set up a fun type of match that folks will enjoy doing. Most of today's shooters have grown up with steel and are not into traditional bullseye. Make the match a "squad" type and the fun will be that much more.
