I'm gonna buy my son his first hd shotgun. He just wants one to keep around the house. It will probably just sit in a closet like most hd shotguns. Maybe come out now and then and maybe fire a few rounds at the range before going back in the closet. No need to spend a lot of money.
I was thinking of a Maverick but have noticed the 320 gets good reviews. Any others in the same price range worth thinking about? I personally don't care for pistol grip shotguns but its not for me. He says he has no preferences, he's never owned a pump shotgun. So, up to me.
He does shoot, ccw 9mm, and 410. My closet gun is the 500, great gun and it does come out a little more than now and then.

Im not overly familiar with Stevens, but Mossberg makes a dang fine shotgun. I prefer the tang safety they have over other offerings. The Firearm Blog did a torture test on "cheap" shotguns and the maverick was the only one that passed with flying colors.

The mossberg maverick is alot more bang for the buck over the stevens 320. And the maverick allows the use of most of the mossberg accessories so changing stocks, forends and so forth easier. There was a couple mavericks on this forum for sale in the shotguns bst threads. Alot of the newer turkey made shotties are showing alot of promise with good reviews but still the maverick would get my vote because the ease of replacing parts if need be. Or shop around and find you a good used Remington 870, or mossberg 500.

I have no experience with Stevens but I have owned multiple Mossbergs and you cant go wrong with them. Cheap, dependable, and a ton of aftermarket support. If it was me and looking at that price point I would go with Winchester SXP. Buds had one for $277 right now.

Doing some research. Turns out the Mossberg Maverick is not really "Mossberg". But, It is.
Mossberg bought the Maverick company. The Maverick is made in lower Texas, near the border "in Maverick County Texas". Not really sure what the company name was. Seems the Maverick was already being produced when bought. Probably with parts and materials from Mexico, low price.
I read that in several different places so I guess true.

No, thats accurate. But they keep most of the parts compatible with the Moss 500.

Well, I got the Maverick security. Prices higher than internet prices but no shipping, credit card charges or ffl fees.
I don't know what it is about Ashebore but since I moved here everything cost more, harder to find and can't get anyone to do anything and when they do It's Wrong.
Just had to say. Sorry.

great choice

Really surprised with the Maverick. Nice feel to it, the finish looks good, smooth action and it holds 8 rounds with the 20" barrel. Better than I thought for a $269 gun. I won't get to shoot it, but it's got me thinking I should get one for myself. But then again, what would I do with another shotgun? Really surprised.

Shoot 3gun with it. There's a match within 10 minutes of you!

On second thought, ignore me. This advice will inevitably lead to a $2000 Benelli.

I tell myself I don't need another shotgun specially another 12ga shotgun everytime I buy another. Most of them though are old single shots that I find in terrible shape and I have to save them. That's my excuse anyway. Then the 14 inch Shockwave style short shotties came out and I've been seeing them everywhere and finally had to add one to my already over abundant 12 ga collection. Didn't go with Shockwave though I went with RIA USA vrpf14 mag fed 12ga shorty.
