A camouflaged man seemingly fired an unloaded gun at a North Carolina couple while intruding on their back porch, surveillance video showed.

A McDowell County couple shared surveillance footage with local news outlets and authorities after a man identified as Tyler Messer stood on their back porch wielding a rifle.

Aiming down the sights, Messer looked back and forth at the couple who was in their house at the time.

"As I’m folding one towel, I have my phone lying in front of me and I see an alert that there’s some motion on the back," Preston McHone told WLOS. "So, I just turn around and yell, ‘Billy, there’s somebody at our back door with a gun,’" he added.

After the alleged misfire, Messer took a moment to inspect his rifle before fleeing from the property.

A what??!!
What's wrong here?? Lots...
Are you talking about the semantics of, no he did not fire an unloaded gun. You can't do that. He attempted to fire an apparently unloaded or malfunctioning gun.

Or this situation is just seriously F'd up.

I live on a little bit of property and there's a locked gate at the driveway about 200yds from the house. That gate is posted with No Trespassing signs and is officially the front door. Deputies have treated it as such.

The other day, the power company called my wife from the gate, needing to do a routine inspection of a transformer on-site. I was inbound about 15mins away. My wife said they could use walk around the gate and do the inspection if they needed. He replied, "No Mam, we'll wait. People around here get shot jumping gates."

I'm thinking that body armor wouldn't do too much against some 12 gauge 00 buck to the legs/pelvis.

Or the head.

Hell, call it a Modified Mozambique.
Being that close blunt force trama would have gotten the guy outside anyway. An extra to the head while he is down with a little extra time to aim.

His family was aware of his condition and did not take any action?
Defendant is mentally ill. Defendant stated to family that he was going to rid the world of sin.

Realize that had it not been for the cameras, they would not have known he was there. Or if his gun had not failed to fire, the first thing they would have know is bullets coming through the door.

Does remind me of one of my all time favorite videos...

Being from this area there is a lot more to the story, to be released in future days… It’s very obvious this person had some mental issues, but that’s still no excuse for his actions… Me given this same situation I would not have an issue cutting this retard in half with 00 buck.. thus saving the tax payers some money by a timely trial in which this will eventually turn out.. It will not come as a great shock to me if he doesn’t get a reduced sentence an be committed to a mental institution for a few years… to possibly be turned out in society to do this again.. to know more about the story log into Mcdowell County Sheriff Dept Facebook page an pay special attention to the surrounding neighbors comments.. that actually know the perpetrator an his family..

My sediments on this being my family was at risk Lowe’s an Home Depot sales new windows an doors every day an I have a good pressure washer…

Would shooting the guy have been a legally-accepted response?

AOJ? Check.
On your cartilage that you can defend? Check.

I'm going with yes. But I'm not asking or having a conversation at that moment either.

I CANNOT have my blinds open at night. It has always freaked me out and drives me nuts when other people do it.

This is nightmare fuel right here.
My wife is the worst for leaving them open. Drives me nuts! Me, sun starts fading, it’s time to close the blinds and curtains!

Yeah, it's that being in a fishbowl thing. Having good outside lighting helps.

Care to elaborate?
