Military Memes

Trouble for me was when my Mother, a WWII Navy vet would address you by your first and last name.

She could make a Drill Sgt cry.

I had a moment like that years ago when I learned the new cherry was born the year I enlisted...brought whole new meaning to "more time in the harness than you have in a t-shirt" kinda of thing. The satisfaction was running that cherry's ass into the ground and threatening to bury him alive in Area J if he ever fell out again.

I was holding my ID card coming in the gate at Hood after just showing to the guard. I get stopped because he thought I had my cell phone in my hand

I got a ticket for jaywalking once. Stood on a corner waiting forever for the light to change and absolutely no traffic anywhere. Finally I said "screw it!" and crossed.

Base Master at Arms guy called me over to his van and told me he was going to write me a ticket for jaywalking. Whatever, dude.

He gets done and hands me the ticket and I asked "What do I do with this?"

He said "Give it to your LPO."

I said "I am my LPO. I guess we know how far this is going to go, don't we?"

Ugh, as bad as regular MPs can be, MAs seem to be worse.

To give them credit, at least I WAS jaywalking at the time. They used to p*ss me off a lot on paydays, though, when I was running Transient Division at COMSUBGRU-6 in Charleston.

The SOBs would wait outside the barber shop at the Exchange and ticket people for needing haircuts.

Outside the barber shop. On paydays.

I can't even begin to tell you how many of these tickets I tore up and threw away. Maybe it would have been more effective if I sat outside the barber shop and tore them up there whenever one of my guys got one.

Don't forget pawn shops and dry cleaners.
For sure, and barber shops and tattoo shops as well, but those 4 specific pictures, are pretty much icon of Jacksonville.

Dafuq? o_Oo_Oo_O
I've heard some dumb shit in my time but if that's not the dumbest, it's trying to be.

Yeppers. That's the kind of stupid sh*t I never appreciated in the Navy.

In the early days, when I first got out of boot camp and spent a couple months living in the barracks before moving my wife and newborn up to Great Lakes, I got a taste of some of that stupid sh*t.

Coming across the quarterdeck into the barracks, you had to show your ID. The ID was kept in the left breast pocket (picture out, top of the head positioned towards your breast bone). I pulled my ID out, showed it to the quarterdeck watch...who promptly gigged me for being out of uniform because my pocked was unbuttoned.

The effin' pocket I JUST unbuttoned in order to pull my ID out.

Give people a little bit of power/authority and it rapidly becomes apparent who the d*ckheads are.

If you've ever spent any time at Lejeune.

So, I grew up on Lejeune (TT 1) in the early/mid 70s. Although Jacksonville had some pretty trashy places, it wasn't a bad town back then. Over the years as the strip mall grew and everything moved out and away, a lot of decent shops and restaurants closed and more and more dumps opened up.

Growing up in Fayetteville and being stationed in Jacksonville for almost my entire career so far, I never realized how awful those towns were until I moved away.

It's sad, really.

I still love Jacksonville, warts and all, but stay away from the main areas. I prefer the Hubert/Swansboro/Snead's Ferry areas.

We still own a house in Hubert and I will most likely be rotating back there to do my last tour after I'm done here. I do love the Swansboro, Cedar point and Emerald isle and also Wilmington.
