Well, in our work with kids, we've come to the conclusion that a minie style bullet for a standard camp gun wouldn't be a bad thing. Problem was, commercial ones were just scaled down from 58cal and the geometry, weight, and base cavity were not optimized for a 50cal. So I had a discussion with Steve Brooks at Brooks Molds and we arrived at this design. It's a modification of a pistol bullet made by the Enfield Armory in the early 1850s.

Conventional muzzleloading "wisdom" says you can't shoot a minie in a 50cal gun designed for round ball. Well, have a look-

This was the torture test I ran today. 3 different guns, one a flintlock. Each was shot 15 times straight with no wiping to set up worst possible conditions. Then groups were shot. The Hawkens had the worst handicap in that the front post is an 8moa bead making precise aiming dodgy at best. The best group was turned in by my ugly duckling I've named Schadenfreude Susie. It has a sewer pipe for a barrel but darn if it don't shoot. The flinter was having some issues with the flint and I didn't have a spare so the group is pretty good considering, especially with two bullets literally in one hole and a third only an inch away.

Next step is to get this tested in a camp environment. I'll probably run a small scale test on 10/30 when we have to work with about 100 kids at Scout camp.

I need to find a way/time to connect with you. It's been far too long since I've had the flintlocks out.

Anyone have a black powder game plan in place with Goex closing up? Can’t seem to find it anywhere and Swiss is hard to come by currently as well

Gotta know where to look. I just put back 20lbs and before anyone thinks I'm hoarding, I shoot competition and 20lb won't get me through a year of competition. Cool thing is that Schuetzen has stepped in to take up the slack and I'm liking Swiss much better than Old E at this time. Here's a group I shot today as an experiment, changing only the powder in a known good load for my Parker Hale. That's 5 bullets through that one big ragged hole. The other two were where my dad was shooting his 1862 Colt a few times.

Here's pic of the current minie ball lineup in use in my competition guns. L 2 R- the "Brooks" 50cal minie in testing. Next is the Lyman 580213. Gotta love the square lines of the Rapine Trashcan trucking downrange from an 1862 Colt Contract. It's the shnizzle at a stake busting or a ladder shoot and cuts a very clean round hole in paper. I've shot more than one group that was one ragged hole with it. Next is the RCBS Hogdon, a very accurate bullet that currently use in both my Parker Hales. Last is my new favorite for the Parker Hales, the Moose International. That's the bullet responsible for the hole in the previous post. Performance with it was so so until I tried loading with Swiss. So buh bye Goex Old E, hello Swiss. And for honorable mention, the hole in the target is a five shot group from my 1863 Sharps carbine.
