Anybody here have or know anything about the workings of the Mossberg 42b trigger assembly? Particularly how the trigger spring, plunger and safety work together. I have a 42b project gun that I just can't get right.20200807_101950_resized.jpg

I don't but if you point your browser to RIMFIRECENTRAL.COM I'm quite sure you could find the answer there!

My 144 looks to be the same. What is your problem or do you need photos of one assembled?

In the photo you can see the shiny trigger spring plunger between the head of the trigger and the tip of the safety. It's held in place by the trigger spring pressing it against the safety tip only. I assume that's correct but I've never actually seen one or found any info saying so. Is that the way your's is set up? My problem is when I move the safety back and forth between safe and fire the plunger will jump off that safety tip.
Thanks

Safe is lever right

Fire is lever centered

Assembled blocking tit is down, lever tip points up, plunger rides on lever.

Same lever

Parts are very similar. Your trigger is angled far forward. Are you missing a part or incorrectly assembled.

Safe. Plunger on base of lever tip. Plunger not on tip of tip.

Fire. Plunger on edge of lever, not on tip

That's very interesting. The plunger on mine sit on the tip. Not the edge like yours. But, there's no way to change the set up. The gun shoots fine. I bought a complete trigger assembly and safety lever to use as parts and they are exactly alike. I'm going to try tweeking the trigger adjustment screw and see if that helps.
Thanks for your help.

So, you probably have mismatched parts. I assume your new lever is for the 144/146 and has a different length/spec than the one for the 42. (I also note your trigger is pinned closer to the action than mine so I assume the Mod 42 trigger is also different. Its quite possible your new trigger is also incorrect for the 42. Often I have bought 144/146 parts and received similar but incorrect parts. Differences can be subtle.)

So....to fix this you can try to make a new plunger with a bigger head.

Chuck a gun grade screw in a drill (better steel, 6x48 or 8x40 would likely do, or use LaSalle gun pin steel rod from Brownells) and turn and polish the shaft to a diameter to fit the spring / plunger hole. Mike the shaft of the old plunger for exact diameter. Close is fine.

Flip it around and turn polish the head, where it touches the safety lever to a larger diameter. Fit and try until the new wider head is the right thickness to work in the gap between trigger and safety. Fit and try till you have a new larger diameter that rides the safety without interfering with anything. Dome the head slightly for slick operation. Your new larger headed plunger may need a recess in the plunger hole to slide in and out of.

It may be simpler to simply drill/ream out the hole in the trigger to a larger diameter and make up a new larger but straight sided pin with a new spring. Just depends on how much room you have and where things are out of alignment.
