I'm curios to what most people prefer. For me i started out with plated 9mm and 38spl bc they came with the press i bought used. Then i switched to the RMR FMJ for 9mm. Now im thinking of trying some blue bullets for 9mm and 45acp.

FMJ for me. Most of the time I can get FMJ for the same price as plated from my preferred vendors. I am mainly reloading pistol rounds 45 ACP and 9mm. There is some 38 SPL , 357 Mag and 380 mixed in there as well. I am not a bullseye shooter so I am loading for cost savings, consistency and reliability not pure accuracy.

Plated HP or SWC for the bottom feeders & lead SWC or LWFN for the revolvers, with gas checks when appropriate.

I've loaded about 6,000 Blue Bullet 147 gr. RNs, 6,000 RMR 124 gr. JHPs, and 10,000 Fed. 147 gr. HST JHPs. I have 6,000 RMR-sold-but-not-produced FMJs on the way (only because they didn't have JHPs). So, my preference is JHP. I can still load for cheaper than factory FMJs and if SHTF I have a stockpile of defensive loads.

Mostly RMR plated, but for 357 and 44 magnums I use Zero JSP bullets. For my 9mm AR carbine I use nothing but the RMR in-house 115 FMJ RN.

My handgun loads tend to be specialized and low volume, so the extra cost of actual jacketed bullets isn't significant. For some of them jacketed is the only option (going over the recommended speed limits of plated or coated).

I've just started toying with the coated lead stuff because it's been more available and I always like to know what might be an option in times of famine.

I've never loaded bare lead, have no interest at this time.

Remember when you are shooting those "Phillips Head" bullets we are fortunate to have one of the designers and testers of those wonderful projectiles as a member here!!!
Oh I do! Nothing made me happier than to have my amateur intuition about boolits 'validated' by the expert research and testing of my B&M heroes!

I look for whatever is cheapest and works for practice/fun ammo. This has generally been blues.

Self defense I use quality ammo made for that.

I switched to coated cast years ago and still use them. They're cheaper and they typically run 0.001" large which helps make consistent neck tension when loading mixed RPU brass.
