So this past weekend was the Mount Vernon Revolutionary War Weekend for 2021. We camped and ate on the Estate, held 6 battles/tactical demonstrations of 18th century warfare (3 a day), and gave thousands of spectators the chance to see, hear, smell, and taste a snapshot of life in Revolutionary America.
There were a handful of us from Kingsbury's Independent Light Artillery Regiment there, attached to the 1st Virginia Continental Artillery. We manned a 3 pound Grasshopper brass light field piece for the weekend.
In the final battle of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, we went a bit off script.
We fired 19 out of our gun, "killing" the British Royal Artillery gun crew on another 3 pounder opposing us on the left flank of the field with grapeshot on our 9th shot.
We moved our cannon in line with the American Infantry (Continentals and militia) as they advanced and pushed the British back,, firing the remaining 10 shots in our box......
.....at which point we "captured" the Royal Artillery gun, stole their powder, and turned it around an fired it at the British for 7 more rounds.
I even robbed one of the bodies of their quills because we ran out of ours.
It was insanely fun, and ou rrate of fire was 26 to 5 against that crew, and 26 to 6 against the other Royal Artillery crew for that battle.
The previous battle, we enjoyed a 7 to 3 advantage over the other crew - and only stopped after the British Dragoons overtook our position per the script.
Hell, had we had cavalry in the final battle, Jerry and I were going to draw our swords, charge in behind the cavalry and finish off that gun crew hand to hand and capture it that way.
Unfortunately, the horses were less than cooperative on Sunday, and the cavalry didn't make the final battle.
Some pictures and video from the weekend. I will add more as I get more from other attendees.
