I know we have a plethora of knowledge here so I figured I’d ask before making a run to the DMV tomorrow.

Long story short… My wife and I are moving to Central FL for a job promotion in early June.

We will be keeping our place in the mountains and would like to leave one vehicle here so when we fly back we have something to drive.

My questions are: Would our truck that will be left at the cabin need to be plated and registered in FL since we will be FL residents? Or can we leave it tagged and registered with NC tags?

What ever NC county it stays in, as of Jan 1 each year, will have county taxes applied. You will need to contact the DMV with your new FL address for them to send the annual renewal notice/tax bill. You will have to get a state inspection each year to renew your tag, so you will need to do that when you are back in NC. You can get an inspection up to 90 days before it expires, but if you are 1 day late getting your tag renewed they tack on a $15 penalty.

I was under the impression that all vehicles have to be registered in the state that you are a resident of.

Thanks for all the info guys. It looks like the exception is if you have a second residence where the vehicle spends more than 6 months of the year. In this case this works for my situation.
