My first optic on handgun question

Aren't you the Goomer that couldn't figger out how to use a Sig SAS sight??? Axin' fer a friend???
I can’t figger out how to use this either. But I desperately wanna be one of the Cool Kids.

Are any of you guys cross-dominant?

If so, do you find that the dot helps?

I didn't know about cross-dominance as a kid, so I just closed my left eye to shoot (right handed). I'm still having a hard time with sight picture with both eyes open.

I don't have anything that's red-dot ready, but I have a P-09 that is, mechanically, ridiculously accurate; but has really crummy OEM sights. Thinking about having the slide milled for a dot sight, to have something to experiment with. Heck, I might just send the whole thing to CGW and have them mill the slide and hot-rod the internals. It's such a good pistol bone-stock, that I would never sell it for what it's actually worth. Might as well make it gooder.

I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. The DOT has taught me to shoot with both eyes open, everything about the DOT is target focused. It's taught my brain how to see with both eyes open, I can shoot open sights both eyes open now, rifle, shotgun and handgun.

The only down side to the DOT on a handgun, is it takes time to get your presentation down to have the DOT in the window 100% of the time.

Thank you for that. Sounds like I definitely need to give it a try.

I've fiddled with optics on handguns before. Shot a few.

But this was years ago and they were competition style guns. I didn't really care for the concept.

Now I'm 46, my eyesight seems to change every other day. I wanna give the system a chance now. See if it helps at all.

I've handled several other folks setups. But I figure the only way I'll know for sure is to dive on in.

I have a Glock 48 MOS on the way.

I bought a Holosun HE507K-GR.

I see folks talking about "plates" to mount these optics with.

Do I need a "plate"?

If so what kind of plate do I need to get?

Are some brands better than others? Any that y'all recommend?

Lastly, is there anything else I need to know before starting to see if I can "retrain" myself?
For what it might be worth, the swampfox sentinel should mount to the 43x mos or the 48 mos without any adapter plate. Always worth checking the manufacturer’s site.

How are you guys liking your Hellcats?

Im liking it a lot....for never having been to the range with it.
Ive been practicing presentation and dry firing off and on. The dot showed me howbad my presentation really was and its taking a while to break and reform habits.

So I have a green Holosun 507 w/ ACSS Vulcan reticle on the way and a new M&P 2.0 Compact OR (#13143) from FG&G.
I was able to get some range time with my new toy this weekend and it ROCKS!!! I'm definitely a fan of the green instead of the traditional red diodes in RDS. The Vulcan reticule makes it stupid simple to quickly find the dot (chevron in this case) EVERY time no matter what your draw/firing position. I had a shooting buddy run a few rounds through it who was an early convert to RDS on a pistol and he thought it was quite innovative and intuitive.

Have you had a chance to get to the range with the Hellcat yet?

Still liking the Vulcan? I feel like I would prefer a fat dot over the chevron, but the giant circle seems like a great idea. I may be willing to try the chevron.

I’ve got a G19 that might get milled soon and I’ll need my an optic to go on it. I’ve been diehard irons forever, but I’m thinking of trying something new.

@Frack N Cylons

I just let my brother (not a gun guy) shoot my 19 with a holosun (Vulcan reticle) and he picked it up way faster than last time with the rmr.

The battery in the rmr lasts way longer than the holosun but being able to change the battery without taking the optic off and rezeroing is worth the trade off imo.

Shouldn't the MOS models all come with a set of adapter plates? I know my G34 did.
The plates do mot come with the 43X and 48. Don’t know why.

The short answer is yes. I much prefer the Holosun w/Vulcan to any other RDS style sight I've used. I'm comfortable with the chevron although I will admit it will show hand shake much quicker than a 4-6MOA dot. I did get to test the pistol out earlier this month in a night shoot environment and the auto brightness worked flawlessly with a pistol mounted light and also a handheld light. Also, the Vulcan reticule works exactly as advertised from awkward shooting positions with your brain naturally correcting any sight misalignment based on the curvature of the outer circle you are seeing.

The longer answer: So I've been at the range quite a bit this week running drills. Specifically I was testing my draw & fire speed between my M&P Compact 2.0, one with RDS the other with Ameriglo Hackathorn sights (now the Protector Series). Not surprising my draw & fire speed with the irons was ~0.15 sec faster on average. It started out a bit farther apart, but once I remembered to focus on the front sight with the RDS pistol instead of trying to find the dot alone the time gap narrowed. On a technical note the factory front sight is a mere .230in tall which in order to see it above the base of the RDS you need to tip the barrel up thus pushing the chevron up towards the very top of the RDS window. Although options are limited for the M&P (unlike Glock) I am strongly considering changing the front sight to a .420in tall version so the front sight post and chevron have more of a 1/3 lower co-witness vibe than just the chevron hanging out in empty space.

Weird. I’ve never mounted the Vortex Venom I bought for my G34.5. Just never gelled with that gun. Wanna get rid of it & my G26.4, divest myself of my Austrian holdings & go a different direction.

Is it possible to turn off auto brightness and manually set it?

I wish they'd do the big vulcan circle with just a dot in the middle. Chevron is pointless.

Will never understand PA's irrational obsession with triangles.

They put deltas instead of a dot because of a trade mark?
I think they fixed the trademark aiming thing once and for all!

The "A" is the height of a man at 78 yards!
