My Son's In A Bind, '06 F150 5.4 Triton & An '06 X5 BMW 330Xi

True, I haven't seen too much for used full size trucks lately but the ones I have are outrageously overpriced for their millage. $8-10k for trucks with 200+k on the OD, nope! Not this cat!
I recently picked up a truck for $11k, which is probably about $2k low. 2 years ago I could have found the same truck for $8k.

The car market, and more so the truck market, is insane currently.

I'm still waiting on delivery of my new truck. If I hadn't been able to wait I would have paid as much or more for used than MSRP for new. You can save a few $K's buying a 2 or 3 year old truck but what for?

I once saw a current model year used truck for $14K more than MSRP, and a truck with over 300K miles listed for $14,000

These are insane prices for used, but that seems to be the norm today.

If he is original owner, check rate on refi the truck since they have increased in value in used market. Use proceeds to pay for new engine.
Agree sell the BMW (Bring More Money).

id get a second opinion on the truck 1st. some chain tensioners/guides and phaser lock outs might just cure whats ailing that engine.

as for "running like crap", when was the last time the plugs/wires/coils were looked at?

To add insult to injury, here at the salvage yard I work at, the 5.4L is the motor that our guys most HATE to remove from a vehicle.

I have a box of the used coils, they all had good resistance readings but I replaced them early on in the troubleshooting(not really troubleshooting just parts changing) process, and I think three or four wiring harness coil replacement ends in case they break. If your son thinks he's going down the route of repair or diagnose the F-150 I'll send them out, just need an address.

Just put a timing chain kit with phaser solenoids and sprockets on the ford. )clean the broken guides out of the oil pan and pickup. Junk the bmw.

Are the vehicles paid for or does he owe on them?

BMW: Big Maintenance Worry. Get rid of it. Sell it for whatever he can get and use the money to mitigate the cost of another vehicle or repair of the truck.

What's the condition of the rest of the truck? There are a couple issues here to consider.

If he owes, then he's got the cost of repairs on top of what he owes. Also, he may end up repairing the truck for a pretty penny and then end up having the transmission fall out or something. Can't ignore that possibility.

If the truck is otherwise in good condition, then an engine replacement isn't much more than a decent used car of similar age. If he sells the BMW, then he could mitigate the cost of truck repair significantly. If it costs $5,000 to replace the engine and he gets $1,000 or $1,500 for the BMW as-is, then the truck is only a $3,500 to $4,000 repair.

I don't have any experience with such an engine, but based on other's postings here, it's in-for-a-penny, in-for-a-pound. Either replace the engine (long block would be my preference), or risk a very real possibility of "cheaper repair" costing more in the long run.
