I am a member of my church's Safety team. We are clearly identified to law enforcement by what we wear. We have to be aware of the fact in NC anyone with CCH could be armed in the congregation and engage with an active shooter. I was speaking with a leader in SC on a church safety team, and he said that in SC no one can lawfully carry in church unless registered with the church and blessed (no pun intended). Is anyone aware of any references to the different laws that apply to Conceal Carry in NC vs. SC? I travel across the state line all the time. Thanks.

North Carolina recognizes every carry permit (except the US Constitution). South Carolina has a much more restrictive list and also refuses to recognize permits issued by any state other than the state in which the carrier resides.

South Carolina requires a permit for open carry. NC does not.

In SC, you can drive with a gun stowed in your glovebox without a permit. In NC, the gun must be plainly visible (Edit: or locked up or stored out of reach; thanks @BigWaylon) unless you have a permit.

Not afraid to be wrong, but would you mind explaining? My understanding was that, without a permit, the gun has to be openly visible within the vehicle or else it has to be locked up or put in a compartment out of reach.

But that’s not what you said. You said it either had to be in the open, or you had to have a permit.

That statement is what I was saying was incorrect. It would imply if I was going to the range, I’d have to lay every firearm I was taking out in plain sight.

As you posted the second time (the one I’m quoting), it can also be “stored” instead of “concealed”.

Ah fair enough, understood. I guess I wasn't really thinking in terms of range trips, more in terms of carrying, since the guy said he travels into/through the state. I was focusing on the fact that you can't just throw a loaded gun into an unlocked glovebox or console if you don't have the permit, which you can do in other states like VA and SC. You're absolutely right, what I said first obviously wasn't the whole story.

I feel like you have a good grasp of it already. I thought that there was reciprocity but you do need permission for certain places like church or someone's private property.
