Anyone have a recent version of the NC Concealed Carry Handgun Training manual in pdf form? I'm trying to go mostly paperless, so I'd like to have this in digital form and recycle the paper copy.

i think this might be what you are looking for.

That is not the Red Book. That is just a publication from the Attorney General's office and the DOJ that is provided for the following purpose.

This publication is designed to assemble and present the basic firearms and weapons laws of North Carolina in an effort to educate and emphasize for the public, the responsibilities and duties pertaining to the possession and use of firearms and related weapons in North Carolina.

It does not not discuss the use of deadly force laws. The Red Book does.

I was just coming back to this thread to post that.

That said, NCFubar , I appreciate your posting the NC Firearms Laws publication. Handy thing to have on my phone!

I could scan mine into my PC. My book is from my 2013 class if that's recent enough

I would not recommend that. The Red Book is clearly marked on the inside cover with the following notice:

(C) Copyright 2015 North Carolina Justice Academy, Salemburg, North Carolina.

All rights reserved. No part of this book may be copied or reproduced in any form or by any means.

To scan it and post it would be a violation of the copyright laws.

For reference, violations of the copyright laws may result in:

The legal penalties for copyright infringement are:
  1. Infringer pays the actual dollar amount of damages and profits.
  2. The law provides a range from $200 to $150,000 for each work infringed.
  3. Infringer pays for all attorneys fees and court costs.
  4. The Court can issue an injunction to stop the infringing acts.
  5. The Court can impound the illegal works.
  6. The infringer can go to jail.

A book from 2013 is out of date. A new copy of the book can be obtained from the NC Justice Academy

Order Form: http://ncja.ncdoj.gov/getdoc/99b77f...6b1d62/CCH-Training-Materials-Order-Form.aspx

The Red Book is the one titled Concealed Carry Handgun Training. The other book is the trainer's guide.

Well that explains why I cannot find a pdf online.

I'll order the current edition and scan it for personal reference.

I think they are only sold in lots of 25.

Heh. They really make it easy on a guy to get a digital copy, eh?

I emailed them about getting a pdf of the one I own in print, but I suspect they'll either not reply or turn me down.

You do realize that you technically just broke that copyright law, correct? You reproduced a part of the book by means of transcription.....

I am pretty sure those quotes fall under the Fair Use provision.

so does a reproduced copy of something you bought.

Ehhh... I reject that outright.

I paid for the class and materials. My Cabarrus County Sheriff's Deputy instructor suggested we scan the book for easy digital access in the future.

I'm still willing to scan if so desired.

Scanning for your own personal use is one thing. Making a copy to give to someone else is different and is illegal.

For your own use. As soon as you give a copy to someone else, you have broken the law.

Note that in your previous two posts you asserted that (1) reproducing two sentences of the red book is copyright infringement, while (2) reproducing the whole document is not.

Here is the relevant section of the law:

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Note that reproducing two sentences provides a very strong argument for fair use under criteria 1,3, and 4. It is hard to argue for fair use under any of the criteria if one is distributing the pdf to others, as was discussed in this thread. Making a pdf for your own purposes could be argued qualifies under criterion #4.

Negative. Any number of books can be ordered.

The only minimum order I am aware of is in regards to the certificates issued by instructors. There is a minimum of 25 certificates per order.

Ehhh...you may be right. I always order both at the same time, so that may be why I thought they had a minimum on books.
