Did I read somewhere that NC residents can purchase long guns in neighboring states? With a CHP? From individuals (I doubt this one)?
Learn me please….

Yup. this is what the law says"Neighboring states" is not a thing. You can purchase a long gun in ANY state from an FFL dealer so long as state laws at the location, and in your home state, don't prohibit it. person-to-person sales between residents of different states are prohibited by federal law.
To whom may an unlicensed person transfer firearms under the GCA? | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
A person may transfer a firearm to an unlicensed resident of their state, provided the transferor does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the transferee is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under federal law. There may be state laws that regulate intrastate firearm...www.atf.gov
18 U.S.C 922(a)(5)i don't know where it's explicitly prohibited,
you may be right.18 U.S.C 922(a)(5)
Don't take my word for anything because I'm just a keyboard huntenpecker. But if you can make any sense of the legalese, it's in there.
FFL has to be involved if the two parties live in different states.Yup. this is what the law says
i believe the law doesn't say exactly the same things are true if somebody from another state brings a long gun into your state and you get it in your own home state... i don't know where it's explicitly prohibited, but that doesn't mean it would be considered perfectly legal either.
for the record, i would never do either and would always do transfers through an FFL
lame.FFL has to be involved if the two parties live in different states.
If it’s a long gun, you can use an FFL in either state. If it’s a handgun, it has to be an FFL in the buyer’s state.
After dealing with the FFL take it home.Okay….so…..
If I buy a private gun in SC from a SC resident and use a SC FFL to do the transfer, can I take the gun with me, or does it have to be shipped to my FFL or residence?
If you are in Virginia you are SOL. You MUST go through a FFL to do any transfers. I have written my rep in House of Delegates and even The Lt. Governor about this. All I hear is crickets Once they take your rights -you NEVER get them back.
Long gun, yes.Okay….so…..

Yes I know -not with a lot of sucessHave you joined VCDL? They are actively fighting this
ALL transfers between states MUST be processed through an FFL (receiver/buyer's state for handguns, either state for long guns) for the transfer to be legal. that said, who's gonna know?Do you all know if the rules are different for a gift? My father in law lives in SC (we're in NC) and wants to give me his deer rifle and a handgun. It seems like the rules are the same, but I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer.
