I've googled and scratched my head until I've given up. I'm trying to find the story (may have even seen it on here) about a man who made a bet that he could survive in the woods for a month with his best friend. Every one including his wife and best friend thought he was dead, but he came out years later, having enjoyed the solitude. He lived in a cave and talks about catching his first deer, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds very familiar. I don't remember where I read or heard about it though.

Well your post got me to buy another book. While googling I came across "The Stranger In the Woods" . Sounds like it will be an interesting read.

I remember a couple of similar stories, but none with those details. None of the ones I know of are particularly uplifting. Sorry, let me keep thinking about it.

To help jog some memories: another point in the story was that when he first came out of the woods he made a call to his friend to get a ride home and collect his hundred bucks.

I swear I remember reading a story like that in boys life in the 80’s

You mean like the tragic Chris McCandless story, Into the Wild?

That's one I remember, yes, but it doesn't fit OPs description at all. Another Chris (Knight) is a closer fit, but still not a match.
