Short version is a friend passed 9 years ago and his widow recently asked me to help her sort out some things. During the first round of pulling stuff out of the safe we uncover a number of Randall knives which have been in their leather sheaths all this time.

So now the plan is to clean up the minor corrosion on the hilts with metal polish and wipe down the blades but I'm not sure how best to store them long term since Randall Made states not to leave them in the sheath.

So what do I tell her wrap them in - old towels, nylon sheaths, silk and a cigar box? TIA

Wipe the down with olive oil then anything that will protect the edge from being hit. The oil will keep it from rusting.

Nope … not in leather for long term (or really even short). For my old bayonets I wipe them down with CLP and wrap them in GunWrap paper (about 50¢ per sheet from Brownells) which is kinda sorta like the good old paper S&W and sone others use to use.

I’ve oiled them lightly, wrapped in saran wrap and stuck them back into their sheaths.

I’ve stored them outside their sheaths but with their sheath in sealed plastic boxes with vci tabs and silica gel.

I’ve even just left them on the shelf in the closet.

Randall used to have zippered nylon cases for their knives. I keep the knife in one and the sheath in another.

Just my opinion I wouldn’t use any oil that would go rancid. Definitely long term storage should not be in sheaths. Any high quality gun oil for rust protection or paste wax will prevent rust. But She may want to store them in an area where they can be taken out occasionally and cared for.
