Looking to my CFF brothers and sisters here: I have had a US 1917 Remington .30-06 posted here for sale without any takers. The thing has an amazing action and, at some point in its life has been "sporterized" .......aka, fitted with different furniture, albeit gorgeous. As I have had no takers, I'd like to go ahead and re-re-configure it to something with a much shorter barrel and much lighter than its 10lbs! Any recommendations as to who can trim this one down for me?

What has been done to the metal?
A reblue?
If not find an original style stock and it should move.

Nothing to the metal...... save for a few spots of blue "removal" compliments of pickled egg vinegar. Thing has gorgeous blue otherwise. As opposed to swapping furniture, I think I'm leaning towards a compact, lightweight, bolt action .30-06

Sort of thinking Jeff Cooper "Scout" config.

I would advise against cutting the barrel down. To do the job properly you should remove the barrel from the action to cut it down and recrown properly. The problem you run into with the P17’s (and P14’s as well) is the barrel is virtually impossible to remove. Several theories why exist from burrs on the barrel threads to improper thread specs. Whatever the reason the results are the same, barrels will not come off.

I hear 'ya. I certainly would not consider doing the job myself. It is an amazing rifle, but I have spent the last 40yrs looking at it and not using it. As its already been futzed with, I'd like to retain the action, markings, etc, but have it made way more compact and useable.

From a financial POV, it might be less expensive to just purchase a modern version of what you want. By the time you get all the work done, you have a butchered rifle made from a butchered rifle.

Put it back to original configuration and use the funds to buy a suitable modern rifle. I've restored a couple in the past. The stuff is available out there

You didn't ask, but I second the vote to just restore it. It's a martial arm and a piece of American history. And for now, it shouldn't be too difficult to source the parts and complete.

I'm going to be different, go ahead and customize it to make the rifle you want. Its a great action to build a custom on. Search around and find a good Smith, spend the money and have a great heirloom built out of it.

I'm grouchy tonight so all the people saying to restore it and then sell it could buy it from you and do it themselves. Its your rifle and if you want to customize it go ahead. Have a custom stock made, cut the barrel, scope it and have the rifle that you want. 😁
