Two state lawmakers in South Carolina have introduced legislation that calls for a 7 percent fee to be added to all gun sales.

Reps. Wendy Brawley and Ivory Thigpen, both Democrats, proposed the legislation with the hope that the money made would be used to fund more school resource officers, according to local NBC outlet WYFF.

“The governor made placing an SRO [school resource officer] in every school in South Carolina — public school — a major campaign issue and we would hope that he was serious about that because this gives us a very good head-start toward getting toward that goal and we are hoping that he will support this and will encourage others in his party to do the same,” Brawley told the local outlet.

The two lawmakers estimate $22 million in revenue could be made from the fee on gun purchases. They say more than 600 schools in South Carolina are currently without a school resource officer, primarily because of a lack of funding.

Brawley and Thigpen said they hope the proposal can garner bipartisan support and that they in no way are trying to take guns away from citizens of the state.

“We live in a state where people buy guns and people own guns. We’re not in any way saying that people shouldn’t do that. As a matter of fact, people have every right to. What we are saying is that we need recurring revenue and funds to provide the type of security and safety that our children need,” Thigpen said.

A statement from the office of Gov. Henry McMaster (R) regarding the proposal decried the idea of adding a tax to guns and said funds for resource officers must be found in other ways.

“The governor has said before that we cannot tax our way to prosperity. New taxes or fees will slow economic growth and unduly burden the people of South Carolina,” the statement read.

“Governor McMaster was the first to start talking about the need for school resource officers last year in his state of the state address and secured more than $2 million in the final budget for a pilot program to begin the process of reaching his goal of having a certified law enforcement officer in every school, in every county, all day, every day. Reaching that goal is a matter of prioritizing existing funds — not simply taxing and spending.”

Why tax just guns? Tax everything. Raise your sales tax 0.2% or pick something that is actually harmful like cigarettes or alcohol.
Oh, they’re already taxed too much? Looks like you need to cut spending somewhere else. Shocker.

SRO’s in every school? Yes!
Taxing gun sales? GFY, thanks.

To me, this is what really jumps off the page. How many times in the past has legislation been passed on a "hope" and then it gets re-directed somewhere else?

Never mind.........................

Thats only 1 extra RSO per a school.

and that is at only 600 schools.

If more and less pay then still maybe able to do it

Yea pull it from somewhere else or cut spending elsewhere to fund more than 1

All product specific taxes should be banned. Federal, state, and local level.
Taxes on alcohol and cigarettes have sent nearly as much money into organized crime accounts as government accounts.
Sure it allows the to be A TV series dedicated to moonshine. But that just proves the harm alcohol taxes do.
Just a tatal sales tax. No exemptions.
The gun tax would only be raised to a level that is meant to radically increase the cost of guns once Dumbocrats control everything again. They did the same with cigarette taxes.

You didn't expect the firearms abolitionists to pay for protective services themselves, surely? ;)
It's always about other people's money. And stop calling me Shirley. :D

They are Democrats, so some Republicans should step up and propose a reduction on EBT or some state funded social program by $50mm with the hope that the savings will go to safety for children. Come out and say that they really expect bipartisan support because it’s for the children.

Put them in a box.

And what pray tell is the rationale for making gun purchasers bear the burden for this tax? Perhaps there should be a tax levied on mental health services. o_O

"The governor has said before that we cannot tax our way to prosperity." But isn't exactly what their doing?? But directed at gun owners ONLY!!! Since when is it okay to just tax ONE specific group??
If we need to raise money let's just tax left handed people, their weird anyway, or how about people that drive white cars?? There's a lot of them..

Pretty sure SC ended up with $175M+ surplus this year and more that half of that is expected to be recurring, if the reporting I heard is accurate...that is, until they figure out how to piss that away shortly...use that for the $22M stated above...

And give me some of mine back while you’re at it!!! Shocking thought! o_O

Let's see, it's unconstitutional to have a Poll tax because it infringes on a person's right to vote but adding an additional tax on gun purchases is not infringement on a citizens 2nd amendment right o_O

When they want you to buy less of something specific, they say that raising taxes on it will cause people to buy less of it. When they raise taxes on everything, they tell us that raising taxes won't cause people to buy less. They are all liars.

Let them use the millions that are supposed to go for roads to pay for this. They sure as hell ain't fixing roads.

On a side note. Report every pot hole in the road. Once reported, if the DOT doesn't fix the pothole in a reasonable amount of time you can submit a claim for damages caused by said pothole.

Tax work, subsidize laziness and bad lifestyle choices. Now we have a few generations that won't work because it doesn't pay as well as being a welfare leach.
