In Virginia many wink at the law that says gun sales MUST go through FFL -a lot of private sales still go on -I have been encouraged to do the same. That's great until one day down the road the gun I sold privately ends up in a criminal investigation and they are knocking on my door -no thanks.

I have a Ruger SBH that I bought new for $285 in 1998. I have it in my gun inventory spread sheet with a today sell price at $700. I just used an inflation calculator to see how much it should be in 2023. It would be $735.30. So I would be loosing $35.30.

The 2.74% inflation rate means $1 in 1988 is equivalent to $2.58 today. This inflation calculator uses the official US consumer price index published by the Department of Labor.
