Next step is to abolish the police.

Criminal justice activists around the country argue crime can be solved by other means than a police force.

Of course it can, in a couple different manors. A big tall tree and a short piece of rope or perhaps take them rascals out in swamp, put em on their knees and tie 'em to a stump...

Yep,now I got ya'll singing Charlie Daniels at 1230am

I like the second commentator’s thought that what would happen is that people would find other ways to secure their community. Let’s be honest with ourselves. The current legal system is failing miserably when it comes to crime and the jail / prison system is not working. We have known perps and felons roaming around the streets victimizing people. Every day the news here in High Point is another shooting. What are the cops, paid by money forcibly stolen from people like me, doing? Sitting in a parking lot near the affluent neighborhoods fuzzing first Susie Soccer Mom to commit a crime against the state to issue her a form demanding money to be paid to the cops bosses. Eff that.

Like with most things, get the government out of the way and the problems will get solved by the people.

Sure. Replace the PD with local gangs that collect "protection" money to avoid being attacked by said local gangs.
Granted, in cities where the people have been disarmed, the local PD has become the gang collecting "protection money."
NYC, NJ, Chiraq, Boston......

Laws need law enforcement. If no laws then no need for law enforcement. One cannot be without the other no matter how you slice it. No LEO, no emergency services. Some cops are bad, some doctors are bad, some preachers are bad, some of everybody are bad.

So how did laws get enforced before the 1850s with the arrival of the Popo.

Tell you what, I'm going to jump out of this since I have a bias. Ya'll have at it.

Couple of white guys that wouldn't recognize crime until it hits them over the head!!

I will agree that sometimes PoPo seem ineffective and useless but at least it's a front line between TRUE crime and MY front door. Once they fail is where I step in and the only way I know of the SOLVE the issue is to kill people. I'm not a negotiator and I'm sure as hell NOT your friend, I'm the end of your life as you know it.....

Um, duhhhh. Every one, like, know like, hugs and songs can heal the deviant soul. Just take a hit of this and follow me on a cosmic journey to crime free oasis brahhhh

Law enforcement was previously the responsibility of sheriffs, constables, and often citizens temporarily deputized to help them.

Also... going back to the topic in the first post..... for anyone who wants to live in a police-free area, I recommend that they travel the world and visit some places where this is the case. Start in Afghanistan's hills.
I'm armed to the teeth here................

Hey, @Me. if lack of opportunity is the problem then how come we didn’t have a crime wave during the Depression? It’s more a lack of character than a lack of opportunity.

Do we have a crime wave now? Or are we just hearing about the crimes more, due to media/internet, than we have in the past?

I guess my point is - maybe the crime was just as bad, but it wasnt/isnt as well known due to lack of media
We had thugs in the 20s
We had people selling illegal substances in the 20s
We had bank robbers
People running from the cops
etc etc

We know that the police can't stop crime, they are an after action unit. The rate of crime solved by the police is a joke.

People’s clothes weren’t even soaked through yet.

OK, that’s an exaggeration, but lawlessness set in within three days.

Although.... the police were part of the problem there. I think they were the only ones who murdered people the first week.

During a disaster like that there are a lot of folks that will use the confusion to settle some scores.

I remember a news cast from Iraq when we deposed Saddam. There was all kings of gunfire in the distance and one of the officers there said that that was not between the US and insurgents, it was the locals settling grudges.

That makes the point. Remove the threat of law enforcement and you are hours away from social decay.

I believe people don’t give enough credit to the line between “us” and “them” that is held minute-by-minute by the country’s police forces.
I compare to them as garbage men. You don't notice the trash man but when they go on strike and the trash starts to back up you start to see that they are what makes life as we know it livable.
