I was in a LGS today doing some window shopping. I noticed a sign posted stating that since there was no longer a purchase permit requirement in NC, they would be charging a $5 fee for doing a NICS check on purchases requiring one. What are your thoughts? I have a CCW permit so no effect on me. I was curious about what thoughts others had on this?

It doesn’t bother me as long as it’s up front. I’m also sure it’s an easily waived thing as part of a negotiating process.

This. I completely understand an FFL trying to recover the cost of time to run the check, particularly when there are delays or denials. With that said, we don’t charge a fee, but sure are tempted to sometimes.

That LGS is ran by a bunch of MiG-15s.

This is America. They can charge what they want. I don't automatically associate it with shady business practice. You don't have to buy there if you don't want too. You can walk away. As mentioned, there are creative ways to handle it. There are more important factors to me than a $5 fee.

Just sayin'...

It was an oppressive and unconstitutional law and jackasses who are charging a former state tax to do their FUDGING JOB by calling NICS need to be shamed like the greedy little pissants they are.

Just sayin'

It looks like the shop is trying to nickel and dime people, that would turn me away despite having a CCW.

I view this similar to credit card fees. Yes, we all know there is a cost, but in general, it’s a cost of doing business that is rolled into the posted price. Posting a price that is not the final price (excl tax), makes it feel like buying a car and we know how much everyone loves that experience.

They can do what they want, but why the hell did everyone want to get rid of a PPP just to keep screwing ourselves. Y'all want to know why LGSs are dying? Stupid crap like this just screwing a customer.

You're charging for time that your employee is already on the clock anyways so no it is not for their time; it is because your an ignorant and greedy douche canoe. Did they charge that $5 for long guns before the PPP was repealed?

Assuming they were not charging it on rifles and shotguns before this. If not it's BS. They incorporated the time into the cost of the rest of their firearms, you don't think that already applied to the pistols? Yeah, OK.

Most gun stores I've been into have had more attitude than product, which is the opposite of online shopping.

Had they been doing this for long guns all along it would be one thing, because handguns are added to it now, I think it’s crap. But free market and all that jazz

You know what states who’ve never had PPP’s charge for the NICS check? Nothing….I can’t believe some of y’all are OK with it; living with the PPP nonsense for so long has some of y’all truly brainwashed. Go take a look at the pistol B/S/T section and notice how many just can’t let go of the concept that you need to require something to buy a pistol.

Personally I’d rather pay more for a pistol somewhere else than patronize a business that’s trying to exploit y’all for literally doing their job. Same goes for the clowns in BST putting their own requirements in place, it’s no different than the ones who wanted a CCW/PPP for long gun purchases a couple months ago. You guys will never get over this Stockholm Syndrome if you keep condoning that kind of nonsense.

From what I see, the PPP repeal has been good for local gun shops, increasing traffic and driving revenue. That fee, which is basically employee labor, should have already been baked into the pricing model. As others have said, it was already there for long guns.

I'll admit, I hate doing the NICS check. The system is unpredictable - some come back in seconds, other 45 minutes. Lately, it seems they are skewing towards taking longer. When that happens, it impacts the customer's purchase experience with me. It's not the FBI standing in front of them apologizing for the slow response.

That said, I see it as a cost of doing business. We agreed to it when we applied for our licenses.

I know they were already short staffed.. but I wonder if the recent strain / increased time frames are a byproduct of the recent change in NC law? (what would have been PPP with no background check requirement, is now a check… not to mention the influx of folks that are purchasing, since they don’t need to go get the PPP). Also, I try to use the online system when possible, to bypass the wait time for calling in.

It must be crazy working in a large LGS or Big Box selling firearms. I suspect the ratio of “I’ve never touched a gun before” to “Write up another G19 as a backup to the three I’ve already bought from you” is now heavily in favor of the former.

I’m imagining two of the most frequently asked questions…

“Waddya mean I need a background check? That law just changed.”

“The clip holds 15 bullets. How much will it cost to add one box of ammo that contains 15?”

Now, please tell us how you really feel.🤣

Again, that employee is already getting paid for their labor whether they are playing with their nuts or running a NICS check. The last two guns I've bought the guys behind the counter literally stood around for the 45 minutes I was in the store other than when I bought a gun. It is total BS.

Treat reduction in gun laws like PSA does and you'll be on the right track. They embrace rollbacks of BS laws as soon as possible. Instead in NC you've got idiot FFLs charging extra because they value an extra $5 over anything else.

Let them charge their fee. Let their customers choose whether or not they want to do business with them as a result.

I've been part of the "gun culture" as John Ross put it in Unintended Consequences for over 10 years. There are learned reasons why I no longer shop in gun stores. Some of the attitude I see in threads like this is part of it.
