I'm not sure why the police care. Not like they stop crime or prosecute anything other than politicians seeking office. Don't run as a republican and everything is fine.

This is literally the type of crap a police state does.

The New York City police department plans to pilot the unmanned aircrafts in response to complaints about large gatherings, including private events, over Labor Day weekend, officials announced Thursday.

“If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,” Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner, said at a press conference.

Yeah...except this is not the limits to which they'll utilize this. They are carefully tailoring their comments to only cite "reasonable" examples to which they'll utilize drones. They'll never talk about all the other uses for which they'll use them.

You know...like monitoring WITHOUT having received a complaint or continued monitoring BEYOND that required to follow up on a complaint.

I've been wondering if a strong handheld laser is enough to knock out CCD cameras.
It would probably work, but then the thugs would likely try to claim you hit an aircraft with a laser, which tends to royally piss them off.
This thread also reminds me of when they were having the statue protests in Pittsboro. We had an auxcomm meeting at the EOC and they had activated their command post because of the "protests". We were told to NOT go in there, but when we left the door was open and I peeked in. They had the "protests" displayed on the big monitor screen and I was shocked at the level of video detail. The fact that they were doing that and wanting to be secretive about it screams secret police and police state.

What are the methods for taking down simple drones? Seriously. I've been wondering if a strong handheld laser is enough to knock out CCD cameras. You can legally purchase 5W lasers. I get something like a shotgun and even the shotgun "net" but then you get charged for using a firearm.

ok.
drones are legally aircraft.
here are some quotes and links:

On February 14, 2012, the President signed Public Law 112-95, the "FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012."
Section 311 amended Title 18 of the United States Code (U.S.C.) Chapter 2, § 39, by adding § 39A,
which makes it a federal crime to aim a laser pointer at an aircraft.

( the second link specifies "beam" )

I have a couple just such high powered lasers. But the problem with trying to use them like this is that it's not as easy as one would think. You need to actually track the camera for at least some period of time to actually take out the CCD cameras, because the beams aren't going to either be at the same diameter as it was when it left the laser (and therefore less power per square unit area on target) and not easy to track the target.

Then there is the problem that a 5 Watt laser like you're talking about is a virtual neon sign in the sky pointing directly back at your precise location.

If I were going to do it I would at least go with a high powered IR laser.

I'm gonna guess that since Winston uses them for building inspections and marketing the PD probably has them as well. Have seen them around work a bit.
Had one at the house a year or so ago not sure whose it was. If it was regular I'd hate to see my kid's ruined by a mid-air collision.

Yeah, but then they’d whine that you either interfered with or killed a “robot officer”.

1500 watts on 20 meters might do it. I mean, RF is invisible to the eye.

"Sorry about your drone, I was working Kerguelen Islands in a CW pileup. ...."

I suspect that non-mil drones don't have the most advanced anti ECM protection.

I could almost do this.

I'd have to dig out my old digital ham radio and linear amp.

To be fair they aren't interested in "parties" the way you and I understand parties.
