I think we may be going to Oak Island soon and I would love some suggestions for what to do, where to chow and all that stuff. Within 30-45 minutes drive of Oak Island would be nice. I am sure you guys have lots of experience with the area, so whatcha got?

i assume they do not have a money pit there like nova scotia? lol the money pit up north is a big hole that TV people shovel money into non-stop..
i heard over $$$ one hundred million $$$ thrown away so far. but on the plus side, they have found close to $100 worth of junk. enjoy your trip.

Southport right down the road from oak island has some great restaurants, thrift stores, civil war era cemetery and the fort fisher ferry right there is a cool way to travel across to Kure Beach and carolina Beach where there's a nice aquarium. Alot of the best restaurants at oak island has closed over the years. Still a few small spots for some good hot dogs and burgers and such. If you go back up the road just a bit there's calabash where there is some old classic seafood restaurants.

Go to Southport and eat at Provision Co. Ride the ferry to fort fisher and visit the aquarium as mentioned above. Go to Britt’s Donuts at Carolina Beach if they’re open.

The original jail is there, which is pretty good to walk thru.
I would just park close to the water, stroll around for a couple hours, then do dinner. There is a cool place there with self service beer cooler, and you settle up after you are done. Honor system. Great place right on the water.

I’m sitting on Oak Island right now, whatcha need? Loots of great eats (what do you like?) shopping in Southport, ferry ride is always fun. Go to the west end and walk the point at low tide. Check out Friends of the Oak Island lighthouse. I think they still do tours but I don’t know the current rules.

All good suggestions. I here The Bar B Que House is top rated. We may hit that one.

It’s good. Donut shop next door is good too, as is Kai Joes a block down for takeout Mexican. Shagger Jacks for casual dinner or Swains for a fancier dinner. Rubys at the Pier for breakfast. Island Jo’s is good too but a bit pricey. Chicken salad or hot dogs at Bobs Dogs. Oak Island Deli always good, or Old Brodge Diner if it isn’t swamped. Lots of good eats.

It's a cryin shame Blue Water Point shuddered.
For authentic local low-country check out Mr P's in SPT. Had Steve out on my flounder rigs a coupla times.
For wilder fare there's the Live Oak. Buffalo, Elk, Ostrich n such on the menu if it hasn't changed.
Can't remember the name of the place on LONG BEACH where the Asian lady talks smack and makes these HUGE cheeseburgers.
The SPT maritime museum is worth the time. Gotta see the Ruark House if yer any kindof "Old Man and the Boy" fan.. Etc., etc..

Lil'Bits for a burger...Fat Andy's I thinks the name of one burger joint on the mainland.

Sometimes in the summer they have craft fair type events near the town center area.

Southport to buy overpriced candy at Bullfrogs corner. Good seafood around as well.

Take the ferry over to Bald Head and see the secluded life if you can.

It's been a few years since I've been able to go down to our family place near oak island. And I can't think of the name of this restaurant either but the Asian lady is a hoot and the massive cheeseburgers are damn good. It's just a tiny hole in the wall place and at lunch time you couldn't hardly get in the door last time I was down there.

What happened to Jones Seafood?
Salt64 is there now looks to be some $$$
Where Jones was just old time beach seafood.

A bunch of good stuff is already above-I agree with about everything.

Little Bits for burgers, Bobs Hotdogs, but for most other eats I go to Southport. The Blue Water Point Marina / The Fish House Restaurant used to be pretty place if you wanted to stay on the island, but it closed. If it has been replaced, I haven't been back. I need to try some of those suggested above. Don't forget the two on the Fish Factory Road leaving the island toward 211-Rusty Hooks and Josephs Italian Bistro.

In Southport: Mr. Ps Bistro, Ports of Call, but my favorite is The Provision Company (Locals just call it "Provisions"). The 3 Crabcake Special and a pound of peel-n-eat shrimp is my usual order. This is the first April in a few years we are not going to start the spring there.

Southport is a great little town to walk the few shops. We also always (several times a trip usually) will take the ferry from Southport over to Ft Fisher (the battlefield is a great historical sight). The ocean side of 421 is also worth a look to enjoy. As stated, get a donut from Britts Donuts on the boardwalk if you are willing to fight parking and crowds (DEPENDING on when you are there.) They have a great selection of donuts (kidding-you will get a simple glazed donut and like it!) and a large selection of drinks (kidding-you'll get white milk in a Styrofoam cup, and like it!) You can of course go on up to Wilmington and see the USS North Carolina battleship, shop, find lots of restaurants, places to drink if that's your thing, etc.

We always hit the antique and consignment stores in OKI and SPT, and always drive over to the Orton Pond / Brunswick Town area. I love photographing the osprey and alligators at Orton Pond. There is a neat movie theather on the south side of 211 also we've taken some movies in at.

Yea it’s some brewery thing but looks not good.

Good but pricey.

Little Bits. I haven’t had that in forever but it’s always still packed.

They sold out. Couple people that have eaten there say Salt64 is worth it. I’d rather have Swains for the money though. Towhee and Brett know their stuff.

Oak Island:

Lil & John’s Sweatreat for ice cream. They have a banana split called the Titanic that has 3 bananas and 10 scoops of ice cream

Pepperoni grill for pizza

Kai Joe’s for tacos. Get there early for supper. It gets packed. Walk up and order with picnic tables

Southport:

Burney’s Bakery of Southport for breakfast. You will not regret it

Eat and Fishy Fishy or Provision. Walk around and do some shopping. The Maritime Museum is fun

Fort Fisher:

Visit the aquarium at Fort Fisher.

If you have never road a ferry, it’s a fun experience to try. Depending on what time of year it can get busy so get there early.

Carolina Beach:

My neighbor’s daughter owns Nauti Dog. It’s good if you like different twist on how to fix a hotdog. We like it.

Brits Donuts

A fun fact about Brunswick County and close surrounding counties. It's only place in the world where the venus fly trap carnivorous plant is found growing wild in its natural habitat. Get back off the beach and into the swampy areas and in the big pines they can be found fairly easy.

That's good to know. I know there protected without some very special permits.I've allways just bought them in the gift shops and such. But I spent alot of time back in the green swamp as a kid with my great grandpa. That's where I learned about the venus flytrap and we would see them everywhere. My great grandpa bought a place in sunset harbor in the early 50s when he got done with ww2 and finished his service. Our family still has the place and while it's not as quite as it was growing up its still one of my favorite places in the world. So many great family memories down there. Since my aunt requires more care these days I haven't been able get down there in couple years. But will get back down there when I can. With all my sisters kids getting to enjoy it down there now it makes 5 generations of memories.

That’s awesome and I’m more than slightly jealous. My wife and I actually lived down there when we first met just off the waterway up that dirt road behind the fishing club. It was pretty awesome, but it’s hard to find a place down there now. I’d love to find a small place to go to on the weekends.

Most of the properties down there has been bought up by transplant yanks as the old families die out and sell off. It was just a quite little neighborhood that if you didn't know you didn't know. The state came in years ago and rebuilt the boat ramp and made it a hot public access then the yanks moved in and it's not what it was but still such a great getaway from the main beaches close by. They have been some million dollar places been built lately on some of the old properties. We still have the 50s mobile home my great grandpa put in. Because of the expense and regulations of building new we are grandfathered in with the old place so we keep it patched up and keep passing it down.
