Saw the thread about folks with Jeeps figured there must be a group that gets together to go play in the woods somewhere. Anywhere besides Uwharrie to go? I enjoy trail riding and playing in the mud and creeks. The places I had been going locally are depleting with so much construction happening.

Most of the jacked up Jeeps and trucks hang out at the mall!

hahaha that's sad but true. :( its amazing how many guys I'll run into at the gas station and their rigs are fully capable of hitting a big mud hole so i'll strike up a conversation and ask them where they go to get them dirty and its almost like I've offended them for even asking that. nothing but mall crawlers.

Sings that a Jeep is a mall krawler.
1. Chrome anywhere.
2. Wheels larger than 17" with tire less than 37". [Generally, off road enthusiasts recommend not larger than 17" so the rim is well protected from off road obstacles. Plus tires for 17" rim are less expensive and ride batter on road too.]
3. Steps on the rocker panels that go lower than the rock sliders. [Talk about creating a hang up hazard.]
4. Hard top installed in the summer. (One can be forgiven this if one lives or works in a high crime neighborhood. )
5. Ask the owner if they regeared for the larger tires and they have no idea what you are asking them.
6. Requires closer inspection: "mud" on the outside but a showroom clean engine compartment. (My 2010 got clay soup up inside the engine bay less than a week after I bought it.)

Feel free to add more.

"I paid too much for this to get it dirty" is something I have heard many times.
The Jeep Dealer in Kernersville sells some mall crawlers. Route 66 modified Jeeps. But none are regeared for the larger tires. They assume that people buying these will never go off road.
I would take a new Jeep Wrangler across the street to Route 66 and have them install mods if I won the lottery an didn't want to do it myself again. But I would not buy a new modified Wrangler from dealer.

Tellico (NC/TN border)
Crozet (VA)
Devil’s Playground (private land near Uwharrie, but they have/had regular open days on NC4x4)

I haven’t been to any of those in a decade since I got out of the hobby, but that’s where I’d go.

I thought I had heard that Tellico was shut down or greatly restricted?

No idea. I know years ago it was, then opened back up...but in the 10+ years since there’s no telling.

My favorite off-road park is Black Mtn OHV by Harlan, KY. I have driven a semi-stock 07 Frontier and ridden in a heavily modified 02 Frontier there and had equal fun due to the bypasses around the hard obstacles.

Not many places in NC to go other than Uwharrie or the Flats (invite only unless they have a Public day).

There's a mud pit here in Davidson County, not my scene but when it's nice that place looks like a party.
yea if you like Bud drinking mud slinging davidson county rednecks. LOL I like to go park and watch them tear the axles out from underneath their trucks. Use to be $ 5 on sundays best 5 dollars I ever spent.

Is Tellico open again?
I thought Green Nazis got it closed.
I hope all of the OHV trail systems on federal lands are reopened.

Good looking truck, what year is it? I had a ‘73 that I regret selling everyday. Always on the hunt for the right replacement.

It is a '79. Its my 2nd. First one I unfortunately sheered a wheel stud and ended up on my lid. Trying to keep this one shiny side up! The 73-79 dentsides have always been my favorite body style. They can still be had for relatively reasonable prices right now. They haven't shot up like the earlier stuff... yet

They all gone cuz!

Not much riding local, I just sold my rig due to this.

There is Hills Backyard trail in Rocky Mount. You need to contact them on their Facebook page to arrange a visit.

Within 4 hours of Durham there is:

Big Creek Rocks in Troy. Private park that is sometimes open to the pub;ic as part of a Carolina Trailblazers event. Nice little place, you can rent it for the weekend privately but it's not cheap to do that.
Grand Overland District in Troy. Another private park that will open in conjunction with a Carolina Trailblazers event. It's geared to training the military in overlanding so the trails aren't hard but the scenery is nice.
Both of the above places are very near Uwharrie and if you want to wheel there (I have done both) watch for the events on NC4x4.com
Patriot Mountain Off Road Park in Valle Crucis
Gulches ORV Park in Laurens SC
The Flats in Marion, it's a private park but they have open rides and groups can rent it out at a reasonable cost.
Potts Mountain Jeep Train that is near Roanoke. Free primitive camping close by and it's totally free. It's a one trail ride that will take 1/2 a day but it dos have some decent obstacles and several play areas for those who like rocks.

There is a small trail system right off of I 40 at the the break in the guard rail between mile 12 and 8. It's supposed to be forest service roads. Not anything real challenging from what I understand but some people like it.

Everything else that I know of that's legal is 6+ hours away.

This being said, the club I'm in, ROC-RTP Offroad Club is hosting a weekend at the Flats March 15-18. Contact either TSConver or myself for info.

Here is my Jeep at Big Creek last summer.
