The wake county dump, or "Convenience Center Site 2" in .gov speak over by hwy 55, takes engine oil. I can't remember if there is a big tank you can dump your collection bin into or do you have to leave it bottled in something that you leave there?

Ours is a big tank. Official limit is 5 gallons at a time at ours. Not that they pay attention to it.

Can’t speak for Wake but Cabarrus is a big tank.
I had the same question the first time I went there so I called and got an answer surprisingly quickly.

Apparently auto parts stores do to. I used to do that back in CA, hadn't seen the signs at the local o'riley's at el when I've been there so I just assumed it wasn't a thing here.

Also rumored walmart does as well.

Let me know what you find out because I’ve started servicing the bike at home and am now collecting oil.

Well heck, I opened this thread, five minutes later i start to actually read it and the auto parts thing has now/already been mentioned. Sorry.

SC trash centers have a large tank you dump into.
Or the ones I've been to have had one.

Used to take mine to Auto Zone just because they were closer than anything else.

The Walmart near me is a hassle to do it, you have to wait for the clerk to unlock the room with outdoor access and go inside to dump it all into the tank. I thought she was going to lock me inside. Wake County Duponie Dr location has huge tank, they offer to take your jugs or you can DIY.
I have a five gallon jug so I DIY. They also accept oil filters, they use a machine to crush them. Used coolant and cooking oil also accepted.

Yes, most auto parts store have a big tank you can dump it in. I’ve even taken it to a local shop, since it was convenient, and politely asked if I could dump it in their tank. It takes 2-3min total so I don’t think anyone minds.
I normally dump my oil at Advance Auto, but I once went to the county when I had 3 5gal buckets of coolant from a flush. AA doesn’t take coolant.

When I take mine in a 5 gal. bucket I pour it myself and reuse the bucket. I see jugs sitting there empty, so I guess people empty and leave them there.

I used to dump at Advance Auto, but then they stopped taking the used filters. Now it is easier to take both to the household hazardous waste.

When I worked retail in the 1970's the auto shop drained antifreeze right into the storm drains.
I was not in the auto shop.

If I did that at home, I’d be a hero to some and murderer to others. We have a dozen stray cats that live in the storm drains in our neighborhood.

Up north the auto parts store I used had a furnace that used waste oil, the owner gladly accepted all the used motor oil.

Every county recycling center I've been to has a tank or barrel you can dump it into. Seen a few shops that have waste oil heaters too. They'll be glad to take used oil.

I ended up going to o'riley's and they collect it there. Dude was happy to dump the containers for me so I bought some of their ridiculously over-priced oil to do my change with.

Now that I have 3 empty 5 quart bottles I can refill them with the next few changes worth of used oil and then see if the dump lets you dump or if you have to leave. At least this way I won't lose my collection bin if I get there and have to leave 'em.

As long as the filter is drained well wrap it in a paper towel and throw it in the trash. I work in the industry. There are also county/city events in many areas. My company works several of them across the state and I'm the moron pouring off all day. If you dump it at an autoparts store my company is probably doing the pickup and refining the oil again into a new product so if you think you're being cheeky by adding in antifreeze or something else it is hurting the process of the recycling.
