Ok, I fell for it…

I find myself in the unfortunate position of needing a car in the near future and this post makes me sad. Good for you though, and I mean that.
Just went thru it. Bring Vaseline. 😢

I'll be waiting for months because I ordered from the factory rather than pay higher prices for a used truck on the lot. Sure wish I had bought in 2019.

There are fair deals to be had if you are a little flexible. We needed another car to replace the wife’s car last month due to selling hers to one of the kids to prevent them from buying another POS used-up car to drive the grandbaby around in.

Anyway, wife was heck bent on another Escape. No new ones in the base configuration to be had anywhere in this time zone.
Found an ’21 Equinox across the street that had been a service loaner with 3700 miles, and the the ‘22s had just hit the lot.

I figured what I thought it was worth, made an offer, haggled, left with the car.

2018 Cruze I bought new in March of 2019 to go back and forth to work. ($17,045)

Covid hit March of 2020, have not been to the office since.

Carmax sent me an offer.

Went today at 1pm, 2pm walked out with $18,700.

Crazy times we are living in guys, crazy.
First - that's awesome. There's many stories like yours (ie: my good friend, his wife has a dune edition beetle, VW recently offered her a deal that would put her into a new jetta for LESS money than she's paying now. It's got tens of thousands of miles (maybe 30ish) and several years old), and it's nuts. Thanks Biden.

Like @fieldgrade stated, if your are patient, do your research, and be ready to pull the trigger you can find some good deals. I was in the market for a used truck. The used truck market is stupid crazy right now. It took me several months and some disappointments of missing some good deals because I was to slow. But I finally found one 2 weeks ago. A little back and forth, and I drove my new to me truck home. 2016 Ford F 150 crew cab with only 45K miles.

Edited to add
Oh and price was no where near market retail value.

You got my truck!
Good for you! I’m looking for a deal as well.

Between mid and high 20s. Market retail was 40K

Oh I didn’t pay 40K. That was just the retail value according to the bank. Not what I have in it. But even with what I paid, it isn’t a weekend beater, hunting, and fishing truck.

quite honestly, that truck should bring low $50's or more right now if it was a diesel. I've been shopping diesel trucks for the past few years, They have become beyond ridiculous, and due to new emission controls, they have gotten far more unreliable/expensive to own.

Finding a good used truck, either late model, or beater, is hard to do in ANY market. I’ve tried, and that’s how I ended up with a new one in early 2018.

The local GM dealer in my town is asking $15K over MSRP for a 2021 work truck dually they bought at an auction. It's brutal.

Don't forget to pay your taxes on that $18,700.

EDIT:

Actually...don't forget to pay your taxes on the capital gains you earned on that ($1,655).

(There are three capital gains rates, currently: if your income is $80,800/year or less, it's 0%. $18,801 to $501,600, it's 15%. Above this, it's 20%)

Knowing Uncle Sam, they'll figure out how to make your income at least $80,801. Because screw you, that's why.
