old carry ammo

@NCFubar mentioned it earlier. If you're concerned about some kind of moisture contamination, then nail polish will prevent that.
Paint a stripe around the bullet/case crimp, and paint the primer.
I have a 357 magnum powerhead on my big fish speargun. It's mounted under the spear on the chassis and was used to pop barracudas that got a little too brave after I had speared a fish.
Anyways, most all the big fish are at deeper depths. 100' and there-abouts. I forget what brand ammo I used but they were nickle case jhp's.
After about 4 or 5 dives with these painted magnums, I'd take them out of rotation and run em through my model 65-3. They always went bang. I never had one fail, and mind you..these rounds had been to 100' or better in salt water 4 or 5 times.
Imagine the pressure these cartridges had seen. You're not gonna duplicate this spraying them with hoppes.
I used red nail polish cause it was easy to see, and I could tell if it was coming off. Which it never did, but a powerhead is different than a handgun. So if you do this with a handgun, check the polish and be sure it hasn't rubbed off.
