Old Fort 3 Gun, 4/24 Inaugural Match *After Action Reports*

I’ll do my best to make it early and drop it off. My littlest minion is happy I’m home and wants to hang out in the shop so I won’t be able to stay long.
Make him some smaller steel targets 😉

I had an absolute blast. Learned a lot about what I’m passable with and what I’m garbage at (old habits of mag dumping shotguns into the berm are hard to break).

I definitely could’ve done better, and I certainly could’ve done worse.

Big thanks to everyone who put this event together, and really made low round count drills interesting. I’ll be back for sure.

Thanks to all that came out! Despite the rain, I think it was an awesome match. I truly appreciate y’all that joined us and hope to see some pictures posted up here!

I’ll get scores posted as soon as possible, likely during the day tomorrow.C8ED723B-58AB-4B5F-9A05-6317629ED9EF.jpeg92031D60-AA7C-45A6-B7E8-CD648058E194.jpeg

I can’t wait to hear how the one stage was with the unimog blocking it.

Let’s see some pics!

Let’s see...
That was the “blind stage” where nobody got to preview before shooting. If they had, some might have just passed. The entire shooting area consisted of 4” deep mud!

Frank (@VOD Tactical ) did his best “flying ballerina” skating through the mud for about 30’ but stuck the landing!

Even so, many shooters told me that was their favorite.

Yeah I liked the blind stage too. Would’ve been my smoothest run had I remembered to stage the shotgun loaded.

After overthinking the first stage, I kinda appreciated just showing up and figuring it out.

That was a fine intro to 3-gun!! If you can not shoot yerself under those conditions, you should be good to go...

I learned A LOT. Mostly about what needs work - old guy gotta own up to the fact he needs magnified optics, for example. But I had a great time with a great bunch of folks. Definitely motivated to make some changes & improvements and try again.

I wish I could've hung around for the dampground camptivities after!

Thanks Tim, Frank, and Jim for making it happen.

Talk about getting thrown into the fire . Mother nature threw a curve ball and the staff handled it with no trouble. It was cold , wet and muddy but we had fun . Great venure for a match look forward to another in better weather

Thank you to all involved! Great day in the rain if your a duck. As @Windini said it shows where all us growing old folks need to improve. Looking for the next one and alot of work before then. Thanks again to Tim and Jim for the stage designs! Thanks to Frank for the venue! Thanks to all the match sponsors including CFF!

Good match with a good vibe, I had lots of fun and learned a ton. I went into this match with a different mindset than usual where my goal was to better understand the equipment I keep on hand for serious use.

Notes to self:
I have no hesitations about my decision to keep a pump shotgun close by for baddies.
Red dots on a rifle are awesome, until they’re not.
I am in horrible physical condition and that must change.
I like gun guy strangers more than most people I know well.

Dang!! I’ll need to try this next time. I need to get some rifle skills developed. I’ve shot many IDPA style matches but that’s it. I’m starting to regret I missed the intro session y’all did not too long ago.

Scores are tallied....

CONGRATS to @frakncylons for winning the "I'm new to 3 Gun!" category. STRONG finish, 10th overall. All of "our" shooters did great.

Edit: Somehow @jjwestbrook tagged himself as "I'm new to 3 Gun!"....he's a darn dirty liar (but a heck of a good shot and great guy!)

+1 on this. My EOTech worked for about 2 stages before the water was so beaded up and all the steam coming off the rifle completely eliminated my sight picture. Definitely never thought of those things before this event.
Interesting. I never had that particular issue, the sight was soaked but I shook off the rifle before the stage and could see mostly without issue. Both eyes open helps.

I have no hangups about the dot on a "go" rifle.

The problem I had was the 350 and 450 targets. I would have been in much better shape with the dot if I had experience at those ranges. If I was doing this regularly, a LPVO would be on my short list. It pissed me off not being able to hit those targets.

a LPVO would be on my short list.

I switched to LPVO even for my HD rifle. A quality LPVO at 1x is just as clear and fast as an RDS/Eotech etc. And being able to observe - if not shoot - with magnification can't hurt. For 'me', the weight difference is negligible.

Something I just thought of...

The prize table at this match was ridiculous. Big thanks to everyone who donated, something like 2/3 of the shooters went home with something. Thank you thank you thank you!
@TacShift and @RR , and the forum owners really stepped up!
