Stage 1. Summary: I Franked it up.
Rifle goes Ok (No magnification red dot and 49 year old eyes), get @ 6 rounds out of the shotgun (Beretta 1301 Comp. Big Blue) and it chokes. I'm fighting with it. She bites me, twice. Drawing blood once. I lay her on the table (not as gentle as she'd like, I'm sure) proceed to start shooting those little halfmoon steel targets with pistol, clear them then proceed to the clays (don't remember if I timed out or stopped). The clay was a shotgun only target, so I got a penalty for the one I did manage to break (LOL). I told Big Blue she was number one with a simple hand gesture when all was said and done. In her defense, I was trying to see how long she would run before I cleaned her. Plan to go back and see when it was purchased and do a guesstimate of how many shells fired before the malfunction.
Put Bella (Big Blue) in the trunk and grabbed her shorter, darker skinned sister. (21" Comp 1301 without the nice finish and fancy springs in the stock) for the rest of the match. Next stage went OK, except for the small steel that I hit and turned sideways so that the edge was facing me. Didn't see it, so a miss after a hit. Need to scan better.
Maybe Stage 3 will be clean. It takes me forever to get the shotgun spinner to spin. And I forget two shotgun targets. The struggles with the shotgun targets meant that by the time I jogged over to the other bay (pistol steel) I timed out long before I ran out of ammo. LOL. I must have had like 10 or 15 failure to engage penalties. I blamed poor aim and the shorter barrel on the shotgun.
Stage 4, it has to get better right? Can't get any of the plates to fall on the plate rack with the shotgun. I can see the pattern of birdshot on the white painted steel target. Confirmed that I didn't have enough choke. Rifle and pistol go OK (for me). Need to check my choke. Sure enough, it says CYL in big yellow letters. You have to laugh. I'd had it in the bedroom for a bit and forgot to change it out. Always check your primary and backup guns BEFORE the match. Lesson learned. Or at least after the first "bad" stage, instead of the second.
Stage 5. Pistol front spitting distance to @60 yards, Rifle out to 350 and no shogun (now that I "may" have a working, properly choked gun, LOL). I was the last shooter and I got the benefit of seeing others run it, including advice from one of the best (Thanks Brady). However, that meant that there wasn't much paint left on the spinner.
This was probably my best stage (in spite of the spinner) I spent last Friday afternoon with a good friend who is an excellent shooter and trainer. We worked on getting my dots zero'd on the rifle (and backup) and the PCC (and backup) so I could hopefully quit wasting ammo on those long range steel. Problem was the spinner, could't really see it all that well and it was late in the day. And my dot started getting fuzzy (I think it was my eyes, strained and sunburned). Is that enough excuses for one target? LOL. I started the stage with my Surefire 60 loaded up with @50 rounds and told the SO. "I won't be reloading, unless I have a malfunction". I emptied it before I timed out and only left the spinner and probably fired @15-20 at it). Was pleased that it ran. Hadn't loaded it up and emptied it before.
Lunch was great. It's an awesome bunch of guys to shoot with (the ladies were on the other squad), and I appreciate my squad's patience with the "slow" guy (me). Thanks to Frank, Tim, Josh, the Lunch Crew, and everyone else for making this happen. Always one of my favorite matches. Even if I did "Frank it up" 3/4 times out of 5. LOL. I encourage anyone who is on the fence about it to come out and try it. If not at VOD, shoot a match somewhere soon. I think you'll be surprised at how much fun it is and how much you'll learn.
Can't wait until next time. How about a Night Match in November after the time change? I'd even volunteer to run a timer and/or learn how to score on that fancy electronic gadget.
Thanks for the Gatorade, Tim. Was a welcome change after the @gallon of water I drank and sweated out.
