Optic on a carry pistol, does it make sense?

I'm early 50's, wear progressive lenses. I feel like an idiot trying to focus on the front site with my head tilted back. Aside from feeling like an idiot, getting that front site in focus sometimes takes longer than finding the dot.....

I'm of the opinion that in a self defense situation, your going to be 3ft or less from your target and a red dot will make little to no difference. However, shooting in general it think it makes a huge difference especially for those with aging eyes. If your wearing readers, it's probably time to start switching over... Not to mention you can use both eyes open to site in a target if the need arises. That could be highly advantageous in a defense situation. (I am also from the one eyed school of site acquisition)

I recently bought a Mark IV 22/45 and decided to put a Vortex on it to see if I liked it. Well, I liked it so much I bought a G19 Gen5 MOS and I'm currently saving for an RMR for it.

The videos that @Pink_Vapor posted are both very good. The Noir video is a series of 4 I think.

My distance vision is still pretty good. I was taught to shoot with both eyes open so I'm used to that. As I said, I do wear readers but while shooting I wear standard eye protection with no magnification and my front sight is just a blur. I figure I want to be able to shoot well that way since I most likely won't be wearing my readers if somethings happens. I hate to add bulk to my pistol but I may have to go that route.

I love my rmr on the g19 i edc. I do dry fire almost daily but I enjoy it so it’s not like I feel obligated to do it. Once you get one and actually figure it out I think most folks won’t want to go back to irons. I also agree with previous statements that using the red dot has helped me to be better with torn sights on other guns.

I’ve been wanting a nice 1911 to carry but hate the thought of how it will look with a rmr riding on it. Keep telling myself it could be my “Sunday driver”.
