I picked up a new 6.5CM the other day to play around with long range shooting. I'll need to scope it. I've been researching and budgeting and basically analyzing to death which to buy for this rifle.
Then, I have this brilliant idea...Shuffle around all of the optics I'm already using! Because of course it makes sense to muck up all of my zeroes, mounts, etc.
Current Situation:
- Spare 16" AR Burris MTAC 1-4x24. This was my first optic used for 3 Gun. I like it, it's simple, but I wish it had a bit more magnification for long range (~325) stages.
- 3 Gun AR. Burris XTR-II 1.5-8x28. I almost love this scope. It gets me the range I want for 3 Gun. The controls are nice, it's repeatable, glass is awesome. But, the reticle is really too "fine" for me when I'm on the clock. The center dot, when not illuminated, is really tough to pick up. And, it's a pig for 3 Gun at nearly 30 ounces. It has a 5.56 BDC reticle.
- AR 10. Vortex PST 6-24 MRAD reticle. Great scope, love it. No complaints. But, do I want something a little less magnification for this rifle? Does the 6x low end make sense for 100 yard shots on a pigs and deer?
- 6.5CM bolt gun. Nekkid.
So, I'm thinking....
- Spare AR - a PA MicroDot and Magpul BUIS that are on the shelf.
- 3 Gun - MTAC 1-4. Really, 4x ought to get me on steel at 325, right?
- AR 10. Burris XTR II 1.5-8. The only drawback to this scope on this rifle is the 5.56 calibrated reticle. But I can overcome that with good notes and practice. Its lower magnification will work well for hunting and the 8x should be good enough to get me out t 5-600 yards.
- 6.5CM bolt gun. Vortex PST 6-24 MRAD. No brainer really. It's a precision optic meant for longer range work, right?
