Paper mill fire in Canton

According to WLOS news the paper mill is on fire this morning. A structural collapse is a concern. No word on any injuries. Hope everyone is safe.

Update: fire is under control. A thousand people work in the mill and it is by far the largest employer in Haywood County. I came tru Haywood yesterday afternoon and the mountains are always incredible.

This will likely impact Canton and Haywood county. The mill is a HUGE employer.

Yeah, I thought they went employee owned several years back when the original paper company (was it Champion?) was going to close it.

I went to high school in West Point, VA.....peeyewwwww......paper mills are stinky.

I grew up 30 miles east from Canton and on some days the fumes would make your eyes water even that far away.

Went by Canton on I-40 about 11;00am this morning, didn't see a thing. Wind must have been blowing the right way.

reminds me of the (Slim Jim) ConAgra explosion in Garner.
contractors caused it and ConAgra closed it.

My co worker has a friend working there and he said it was in a tower nobody goes in except for repairs. The 2 deaths were guys in that tower doing hot work and they got trapped. Sad stuff.
