Is @Lil D never knows what I’m gonna show up in the car with or what I’m gonna pull outta my pocket next. 1/4 mile from home this morning, this lil thing was in the middle of the road. I moved over initially to go around as I figured it had pounced on a rat and would fly when I went past. It watched me pass and didn’t budge. So you know I went back for it. Called my beautiful wife and said “find me a box….. I’m bringing home an owl…”

Couldn’t fly but a few feet at a time. It’s at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital in Sedalia now, hopefully the owner will call me with an update shortly. He’s worked with Raptors before and was the first person I thought of when we started reaching out to folks, had to get ahold of him through a friend of mine. Had also reached out to a few other folks. Through a combined effort he hitched a ride to the vet this morning.

Owls are cool. Did it click at you? The one I worked with would click a lot. Did an internship in college with a rehab center in Whittier.
No he didn’t click…. But the first couple times I tried to pick him up, he pinched my hand with that snapper.

I've had feral kittens absolutely shred me when I picked them up. Ain't no way I'd try to pick up something that well armed.

Hope the prognosis is good for it.

@Burt Gummer, did it appear to have been hit by a car or could you tell?

I saw one last fall sitting in a left turn lane not far from the house. Could not pull over due to all the traffic at about 5:30, so I called the local game warden and left a message. When we came back by about an hour later, it was just a pile of feathers. As bad as the traffic was, I would probably have gotten run over also trying to help it.

what I’m gonna pull outta my pocket next.
So what are you going to name him/her ?

Awesome of you to save it hopefully the vet comes back with good news. Next time someone brags about a new rifle or pistol you can pull out this picture BUT DO YOU HAVE A LITERAL FLYING KILLING MACHINE

Throw a shirt or something over it’s head if you are as fortunate again. I love to hear an owl hooting early in the morning, my gal not so much.
As far as Falconers, there are still a few around but it’s a dying art. My good friend, James Caldwell, was a falconer in Raleigh. He passed away within the past couple of years.

He’s been banged up by something. Vet thinks there’s some brain swelling affecting his vision. Gonna be a touchy few days for him

I hope he pulls through. What a beautiful animal. I found a great horned owl on the golf course standing there in the 16th fairway just like in your picture. Up close that bird was way bigger than I expected. We threw a blanket over it and brought it back to the shop and called the local raptor rescue. It passed unfortunately. They did it had been shot with a BB gun which led to infection. I remember it having the biggest gold eyes and some really big and sharp talons. He could shred you up, no problem and we wound up handing it over with welders gloves.

Good on you, @Burt Gummer.

I told a slightly similar story before, except the owl in my story finally flew away when we tried to go hands on. I say "we" because I had passed the owl and turned around to check it out. By the time I got back to him, another fellow was parked and near it. We spoke and he approached the owl and it ended up flying across the road into a wooded area.

A week or so later, I turned onto the road heading to my house and saw a guy trying to move a turtle (iirc) out of the road. I stopped just to speak and it was the same guy lol...

A few weeks ago, we heard an owl hooting early in the morning. It was a different hoot then I’ve heard before, so I’m not sure what breed. Of course, it drove the dog nuts and it had to bark at it.

In High Point, we had a great horned owl that would hoot at dawn and dusk, especially in the spring and fall.

Majestic birds.

Nice!

Years ago I rescued a red shouldered hawk, (damaged wing from a suspected vehicle hit). I commented to the raptor rescue lady about how docile he was when handling him (the wife and I took pics with him like you did with the owl).

Ann’s comment to that was, “he’s too young and stupid to know he can severely hurt you.”

🤣

Even as a juvenile the grip strength that hawk had was insane.

Susan got a text from Lil D this morning about your owl experience. It looks like a juvenile Barred Owl but I'm no expert. Keep us updated Brian on his/her condition and awesome for you to step up and help an animal in distress sir.

It is a juvenile Barred, far as I know that’s all we have around here. I hope he makes it. I’ve been worried about it all day. Nothing we can do but say we tried though.

Sad news this morning. Vet said there was still no vision this morning. He said he’s pretty sure it was detached retinas from the impact of a car. Raptor center he contacted said there wasn’t a good way to take care of him being 100% blind. He was euthanized this morning.

Sometimes our best isn’t good enough, but don’t let that stop you from trying.

I had one many moons ago in my field just sitting. He opened his wings and it must have been 5'. The rescue had me toss a blanket over him and bring him in but I'm note sure of the outcome.
Good on you for making the effort to save one of Gods beautiful creatures. He may be waiting to thank you in Glory.
