If you’ve never really understood how they worked, I saw somebody post this on ARF. It wasn’t the purpose of the video, but you get a slow motion look at it in action. FF to ~9 min mark if that’s all you care about.

Thank you for sharing that!

7:15 is where the explanation starts. Good explanation and video.

Guess I need to go back and see what I missed. When the guy posted it, he said it was towards the end. I just slid my finger on the slider until it looked like it was the slo-mo part. 🤓

Now that I have my own silencer (with piston) to play with, I have more questions about pistons than I have been able to find answers for.

I know I can buy different pistons for different thread pitch of different hosts.

1. I assume that I do not need a different spring on different hosts. Is that correct?
2. Unable to find a replacement/spare spring. Should I have a spare replacement spring?
3. IF I want to use the silencer on a PCC, do I leave the piston in?
4. (This may be the same question as number 3 asked in a different way.) IF I use the silencer on a host that does not require a piston, do I need a different end plate or how do I configure the silencer with piston?

Being a newbie, I am sure I will have a lot of stupid questions. Get your popcorn ready.

1. Correct. External dimensions of the pistons will be the same, just the thread pitch will be different.
2. I don’t have one, for whatever that’s worth. Wouldn’t hurt to grab one if you were ordering something else.
3. Maybe. If you do, you replace the spring with a fixed barrel spacer. The other option is to remove the whole booster and run a fixed mount (direct thread) instead…if your particular silencer has the fixed mount option. I have some that do and some that don’t. The FBS method is actually better IMHO if you’re going to swap between piston and direct thread.
4. Same as #3.

I saw "pistol booster" and immediately had a Sledge Hammer flashback:
