Saw it on TV so that's why I put it here.

I looked for a post about that incident with RPD pulling over that driver that had hit several cars. If I missed it I apologize (please move or merge).

I normally don't watch those videos since they tend to be doctored to make a point but I did watch this one.

So people called the cops since somebody was plowing into cars (some people even said it seemed intentional to them). They pull over that guy and he won't come out of the car and is high and or drunk and has a bunch of teenagers with him.

Some thoughts on this:
- it seems the cops did have the license plate, so it was not "the wrong car"
- this was not a traffic stop for a busted taillight, there was no chance of this ending with anything but an arrest, the cops can not let somebody in this state drive off
- he hung on to the steering wheel for dear life, they had to get him out of the car (see above)
- the cops did kick and punch him, they did however not hit him in the head with batons or flashlights (I think you remember that incident) or anything the likes. Looked to me like they intended to inflict pain to make him comply
- can't pepper spray or taser into a car with a bunch of other people in there
- once they had him out there was one last kick to get him to roll over and get that handcuffs on. The second that was done there was not one more punch. Ironically that IS in the video widely shared.
- I suspect that the part that was NOT in the widely shared clip may have shown how the stop started, how he was driving, damage to his car and possibly how the cops initially asked him to get out.

I normally don't condone the application of physical violence but in this case what else was there to do?

I'm sure some will say, like the "community activist" who held a press conference, or the person who said the police were like a "gang" would prefer that the officers politely ask the person to get out of the vehicle then patiently wait for him to comply. Even having the next shift come on and relieve them as they continue to wait for compliance.

All that wrestling, why not just count to 3 and then deploy the taser? Zap ‘em until they go to ground.

Just saw the dashboard video as well (on my phone so I don't have a link).

As I suspected, this did not start with a beating. The only thing the guy did right was pull over right away after the cop lit him up. Then he would not turn the car off, would not put his hands on the wheel either. That's when the first cop decided he needed to get him out of the car and secure him. Cop #2 only shows up at the very end so cop #1 had to deal with a situation where he had to handle 3 suspects. In fact during the fracas one got away it seems.

Drunk/high, 2 hit and runs already, car full of kids, and refusing to comply with lawful police orders?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Saw the video, and it looks like Raleigh PD did what they needed to do to get the driver out of the car.

Hard to say off just that. I have a feeling there was quite a bit that lead to that. If they kept hitting him after he was cuffed it wouldnt be a question but that didn’t happen.
Also, if he was damaging others peoples property or endangering others then I have A LOT less sympathy.

Donut did a good breakdown on this if anybody’s interested.

I'm not a cop supervisor or cop or anything important so that prefaced. I saw not a thing wrong with what transpired. You have someone refusing to get out of a 2k pound weapon you do what you need to take control. Obviously the officers had a duty not to retreat and secure the subject. They also did not escalate past securing the subject.

Perhaps better training so officers have better understanding of pressure points.
Bad idea to expose yourself as you knee into the driver, easy to plunge a blade into your inner thigh.

If this was in Richmond County, SC LIVEPD, that driver would be in cuffs in under 60 seconds.

If Deputy Brown made the stop.
