Portland's police chief resigned on Monday, just six months into her job, amid criticism of her department's handling of protests in Oregon's largest city. An African American lieutenant on the force replaced her.

The shakeup came as police have been sharply criticized for using what has been called inappropriate force against some protesters as huge demonstrations continue in Portland.

“To say this was unexpected would be an understatement,” new Police Chief Chuck Lovell said at a news conference. “I’m humbled. I’m going to listen. I’m going to care about the community, and I’m looking forward to this journey.”

He and community leaders of color credited Jami Resch, a white woman, for stepping down as George Floyd protests roiled the city.

No matter how much he listens, it will make no difference.

Don’t get me wrong, kudos if he succeeds sublimating that many organic levels of growth into his current job, but something tells me Peter gonna eff him up.

From lieutenant to police chief of a metro PD? Hmmm. I suspect color may have something to do with it (which is illegal if so).

As expected for rank structure in large metro, LT is a dime a dozen w/ 11 promotions between that rank and chief...

I was thinking the same thing. That's a huge jump.

Personally, her stepping down makes me think of this old Gary Larson cartoon... ;)

Portland is as big a shit hole as Seattle or San Fran. When I started going there in the early 90’s it was pretty nice. Good breweries, bars and restaurants. Safe. On one of my last trips there around 2003 or so it had really changed. I started staying out in the burbs when I went there for business and gave up on downtown. It’s been lost for a long time.

I had no idea they had 11 promotions between those ranks but I sure knew it was a jump of more than 3, which is absurd and should be acutely questioned by anyone who cares. That’s like a Walmart GM becoming CEO of the company, it simply doesn’t happen.

Downtown wasnt that bad in 2003. I worked downtown from 2000 to 2011. Never had any issues walking around bar hopping or hitting music venues in the wee hours...
2009-2010 i worked graveyard shift (IT), and would run out to smoke quite frequently, especially in summer as the building cut our a/c after 6.. so to cool off, hit datacenter or smoke. Heh. Anyway..3 or 4am is around the time the jail would let people out, and being a few blocks away theyd go by our office en route to pioneer square.. learned to skip that hour for a smoke break otherwise youd get hounded for smokes..
But it was around the time the occupy movement hit that it all went to hell in a hand basket. I had changed jobs by then and was traveling the states. When Id end up home on weekends or take the wife to work downtown in 2011 to 2013 timeframe, it was terrible..i didnt want to leave my car in a parking garage past 5pm kinda terrible. I hear from friends it way worse now than ever, one former colleague relayed a tale about sitting in a restaurant and a homeless person dropping trou and backing into the places window and proceeding to crap. Never had that prior..worst youd see was the occasional homeless person whiz in an alley.
Early and Mid 90s was a bit rough before the whole cleanup started, think it was Vera Katz that had that initiative... Once the cleaned up the Pearl district China town followed (sort of) but west burnside was always a little dicey.
There was always hot spots of riff raff in Portland tho.. st. Johns, no-po, and the felony flats in SE...youd get gang shootings in Hollywood by Lloyd Center in the summer.. i cant imagine what its like now, amd have zero interest to see it first hand.

San Fran was always a blast to hit, but way bigger than PDX and a whole new experience. Had to go down a few times in 07 and 08 for work.. being young and stupid we would wonder the Tenderloin in the wee hours..lots of super shady stuff..hookers flashing their goods whike driving on curbs, drug deals everywhere, etc.
Didnt spend a lot if time in Seattle, few concerts downtown at the Crocodile or Showbox..capital hill too.. never seemed that bad at the time..

But that all said, its almost a decade later and new govt running things into the ground..and the lib tards and CA transplants voted them all in..some life long portlanders had moved.. eastern OR or ID and even furthrr to TX..or here like we did. Its a damn shame they have to destroy what was once a great place.

I know.. cool story and all..

Seattle Mayor next. White women gotta go! Well, unless they're married to a POC like a sportsball player or other celebrity

I lived in Beaverton for two years from 2015-2017 amidst the decline. It’s a real bummer because I could see what it used to be before the Californians and homeless took over and it was probably a great place to live.

My wife hated it and I couldn’t get her out fast enough.

Basically, in Portland Antifa turds and rioters get to do whatever they want. Beat people up, trash businesses, etc.

If cops do anything the leftist crybabies go into full soccer foul mode, and cry "brutality".

Yeah, its a total bummer. Lived there 36 years. Split for here sept. 2014.

The first house i ever bought at the age of 22 was on 118th and e. Burnside. Right along the train, and I rarely took the train..hated the riff raff. They built section 8 appts down on 122nd right as I moved to another house too.. fitting for the area..strip clubs within walking distance, etc.

My wife had a condo in the Pearl, lost over 100k in its sale. God knows what itd be like now..that whole area is over run with homeless.

Now there are so many homeless camps along the freeways and overpasses.. just a shame.

Dont miss it.

I miss the Horse Brass Pub though. Pint of pliny and a scotch egg...mmm..

I hate Seattle because of the traffic, the latitude (TOO far North for me- the short days in winter would kill me) & the rain. Great beer, seafood & killer pan-Asian buffets, but the juice ain't worth the squeeze.
