Yeah, I know some here will give me grief but

My family history is basically country folk and I still have relatives who believe a local weather witch near them … and she actually is pretty good on stuff. She told my Aunt and Uncle stack in an extra cord of firewood because the last week of Decembe/first week of January is going to start a “decent spell of weather colder than normal” … colder than usual but dry. So take it with a grain of salt or go on and prepare … but I’m checking the vehicles antifreeze, batteries (and jump box), covering outdoor spigots and such. Properly prepared don’t cost much … if anything … compared to getting your jewels frozen off.

I have noticed that most years there is a significant cold front around the 1st or 2nd week of January, often times followed by a second one a week or so later.

My packing list for January camp has clothing and sleep systems for well below zero to up in the 70's.

A few weeks ago I looked up some weather statistics/history in preparation for camp and confirmed what noway2 posted, Coldest days of the year are typically in the first 2 weeks of Jan.

I hear you guys and understand its when temperatures real start dropping but she’s saying it’s going to drop lower than we’ve seen in recent years … in the northern central part of the state run of days where it does not make it above freezing.

I also hear it as little to no cloud cover … cloud cover can hold daylight’s warmth in .. kinda like you hear the weather forecast “clear and cold”. Little to no cloud cover also leads into the dry weather also. Add in a little extra wind chill after the Sun goes down and crap freezes and don’t warm up much the next day.

I been watchin the caterpillars, the future is unclear because one busted a hydraulic line and I can’t interpret that.

I do like to reload when it’s cold and dry. No evidence to support this, but I fear that if I load during a hot humid summer that I’ll have condensation inside the cartridge during the winter. Has never been a problem, but I still believe.

I'm still hoping to get some December snow and I'll head to the mountains.

interesting.
thanks for the post.
does that Weather Witch also use persimmons?

Does anyone else remember the winter of 93 or 94 when we had temps down to -2 F overnight here in the Triangle for a few days?

(Wow I sound like an old fogie, instead of just a middle aged fogie lol 😂.)

My main memory is not of the cold temp (seems like anything under 15 feels pretty much the same to me) but of my delusion that my car (parked outside) would start. Poor battery. Luckily it worked fine once it warmed back up.

That was in the olden days before we called crap like that a 'polar vortex' and thought it would kill everyone... It was just dang cold 🥶, and without snow you didn't even have to stock up for milk sandwiches.

I’ve spent the majority of my life in the burbs. We generally refer to the first few weeks after the turning of the calendar as winter. When 💩 starts freezing solid it don’t matter if it 32 or 2- it’s cold. The only real sign we get from nature around here is if you see an unusually large number of squirrels gathered around a teeeeeny tiiiiiny bonfire collectively warming their nuts…

I kid I kid….I think we are due for a significant icing event in the piedmont...been a while.

January of 94, I was at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC. 1st year away from home. I had to walk across campus to the gym for class. The pond was froze solid and there were rocks laying on top of it. I'd never seen anything like it. I remember seeing snow flakes fall from the sky everyday one week. I remember it being cold

That's only a problem in the larger cases what have more air in them. Gotta be careful about bullet setback too. All that hot air shrinks when it gets cold and you'll wind up with turtle heads.

the January of 1999 is what sticks in my mind.
temperatures dropped to -16 twice and never
got above freezing for maybe? 5 days.

Lol, and don't forget about the TWO FOOT BLIZZARD the next winter!!!

Where was the -16?

I drove around the 'Ville sideways (on purpose) in my brand new XJ the morning after that fell for 2 hours, looking for an open grocery store, so I could buy beer.

Used to like playing in the snow down there. I'ma stay my butt at home when it snows up here, though.

I feel i'm getting soft. comforts and all. sleeping in a cold weather bag might toughen me up a little. been a long time since i've had to do that.

That shows that you're living right.

Your ancestors would weep for joy knowing you live in such luxury.

The almanac says it is going to be a cold winter with more snow than average in the "northern deep south." My understanding is that NC is the northern deep south so do with that information what you will.

average snow for Raleigh is 3.7".
so a couple of 2" would do it.

Everything I am reading is showing a warmer-than-normal winter. I won't be sad if this is true.

Well, one of you will be right lol

… especially with heating costs going thru the roof … LETS GO BRANDON!!!
Just wait till the Ruskies decide to go kinetic with Ukraine and the gas lines get shut down. Even though that is "over there" it would still impact the price of US natural gas prices in a real negative way. From the (subscription) Forward Observer report this morning, the energy price impact could be an incentive large enough to thwart a NATO response to an invasion.

My 2nd and 3rd week of January look pretty OK by me, and that will probably be enough to curse it. 🤬
