Just snagged a 4lb jug of Longshot & 3lbs of Green Dot, along with a 100 each .358 158gr FTX & .410 210gr FTX at pre-Rona prices. No 2400 or Unique, but they had 110/296, Green & Blue Dot, WSF, WST, W231 & the like. Plenty of rifle powders, but no primers.

@Crazy Carl , you had me until you broke off the “No 2400 or Unique” in me...
I know, right? Nobody's got that right now, which is why I'm grabbing all the Longshot, Green Dot & 4227 I can find. I've got a few pounds each of 2400 & Unique, but am stocking up on other standbys at each end of that spectrum, just to be safe.

I've got a couple years' worth of primers on hand, but I'm still gonna snag every K of LPP, SPP & SRP I can find for "normal" prices.

If you find a pound of a powder you have not tried yet, take this opportunity to try it. At least in the future you will have a better idea of what you can use in a pinch. I started doing this during the last scare. I’ve tried well over 30 different pistol powders - some I will buy again if I have to, some I won’t, but I also discovered a couple of newer powders I really like that most people have not tried, and that is good for me since they are less likely to be sold out during times like this.

I hope this wasn’t too far off topic.

I really want some BE86 to try to replace Unique, but none to be found right now. I've heard really good things about Longshot, so grabbed a bunch when I found it. Would love to try some 300MP. Supposedly more velocity than W296/H110 & doesn't have to be bouncing off the rev limiter to be safe.

My normal is W231 for .45ACP, Unique & 2400 for the .41s & 4227 for the .357Max, with the .41 powders also slated for .357Mag & WSF slated for hot 9mm. With stuff being scarce, I'm hunting down substitutes where I can & have a pretty solid spread from Bullseye to 1680 on hand.

If you can find Universal you can use ir instead of Unique. They are damn near identical and charges are basically identical. I use it instead of Unique because it meters much better in my Dillon 650

And it's much cleaner burning. You just have to watch out when getting to the max pressure loads, where it can get a little squirrely. But, it excells in mid-range and less than max loads. I use it as a direct and preferred substitute for Unique as well. @Crazy Carl, I might have a little Unique if you've got some #41 primers. ;)

+1 to cleaner burning as well. It might just be my imagination, but I think a Universal burns even cleaner with a Magnum Primers. Sort of hard for me to compare since I’ve used magnum primers in all my handgun loads for at least 3 years. From Bullseye to H110 everything is magnum

The trick with Unique and somewhat Universal is you have to get to a certain pressure level before they burn clean and complete. Otherwise you get residue and unburned powder. Low power loads aren't optimal. They work, but they're dirty. Mid to upper mid is the sweet spot. Great working load territory. In use it in 9mm, .38/.357 and .45 Colt. Never been a full max load chaser. I haven't tried magnum primers with Unique/Universal. Haven't had the need, but it makes sense.

Universal also likes a heavier magnum type crimp. That's helped clean up the burn on some of my standard pressure 38spec loads and upper mid 44mag.
