Preparing my Generator

[catching up on posts after surgery...]

In the four years I've been in NC, I've been on generator power about 8 times - the shortest was maybe 2 minutes, the longest was 56 hours (18KW kohler w/ auto-transfer switch running on natural gas)
Dayum! You don’t mess around. You just gave half the forum generator envy!

Small update, switched out the carb and got it running great. Next up is working on the panel.

I was going to pull the carb apart and clean it all out but I found a new one on ebay for 20 bucks shipped. I highly recommend going that route over pulling it apart.

It cost me a pretty penny, but is necessary - I run computer servers, I have 2 sump pumps and 2 dehumidifiers in my crawl space to remove the rainwater that comes through the cinderblock foundation, and I'm on well water.

I don't need 18KW but the cost is in the install, not the genset. The $ differential between 12KW and 18KW is negligible.

Plus those Chinese carbs don’t have the dumb rounded screws for adjustment. Should be good ol’ slotted or Phillips screws. Slight middle finger to the EPA.

You can use a breaker style, but to be safe (legal), it needs an interlock on it that makes you shut off the main before turning on the generator circuit

I have this set-up and a plug on the back of the house like plugging up a camper, I added a tri-fuel carburetor kit to the generator this summer, I can run gasoline, propane, of natural gas. I used to keep about 50 gallons of treated gas on hand. When we finally got natural gas run through the neighborhood we hooked on and I had a quick connect added under the deck that I can run my grill or generator. That thing purrs like a sewing machine and I don't have to lug gas cans back and forth to the store. Or hook or a propane bottle if I need to make it portable.
