My water pressure went to about 110 psi over the weekend and I figure the PRV is bad. I was expecting metal fittings, but when I dug it up I found this blue crap. I’m thinking I could just unscrew the threaded connections and reuse them and the crimped in plastic stuff. Is that about right?

I have some more errands to run before I can take it all apart, hopefully I’ll have a better idea after that.

That is correct -be careful and don't get any dirt in it -there is a screen in the inlet that is easy to stop up -could actually be the problem with the old one if the city has done any work on the main lately.
Cool thank you. So just find a PRV at Lowe’s or whatever, ditch the female threaded parts and install reusing the old female threaded stuff?

did you thwap it?

Big Box stores may not carry a PRV. You may need to go to a supply house like Hajoca, Ferguson or Grainger. Hajoca is just around the corner from my office where you met me the other day. Ferguson is up by Little Hardware.

Check the mfg data plate, you can buy a repair kit for it and not have to replace the valve.

Go to plumbing supply -not Lowes! Do not ditch the female fittings -just unscrew them. The piping looks like Pex -they should turn under the crimp rings and be OK. Don't know your experience level -there are kits but they can be tricky- and if not done carefully you will have leaks!!!

On looking at pic again, looks like a flat flange connection -should unscrew easily -be sure and take pressure off before you try to unscrew and hold on to the PRV when you turn the connection.

For the benefit of my knowledge base, where is that valve located? How does one know where to dig?

Should be either in a in ground box on house side of meter - looks like this one didn't have a box - or under the house as waterline enters the building.

I’ve never seen a box. I’ll look under the house next time I’m down there. But, I remember identifying the incoming water line and don’t remember seeing such a valve.

The meter is about 1/4 mile from the house. Would it logically be near the meter or just “anywhere”?

Should be near the meter or underneath. 1/4 mile line -must be good size waterline or you won't have much pressure anyway.

Ok, thanks all. I did recon at Lowes and they do have PRVs, still haven't had a chance to take it apart (entertaining a 3 year old).

The PRV was in a little round irrigation box a foot away from the meter.

Mine's in my basement. Buried seems like an awful idea.

Lowes and HD have Zurn Wilkins, however I learned people like to rob pieces from them and every other plumbing part/fixture around here.

Shoulda just listened to y'all from the get go. They didn't have what I needed.

I removed it, cleaned it up, and took it with me to compare. It seems that act got it to behave and I'm down from 110psi to 60psi. I'll have to yank it again later in the week and go by one of the supply stores that was mentioned.

I'll be shutting off the main while I'm away during the day...

Thanks again. Love this place.

Clean it up and look at the model number which should be in the casting. Go to the manufacturers web site to find the exact fit replacement. No cutting..no fitting....just a direct fit.
