Rail track anvil

Nice finished piece of work there sir.

Curious why you opted for mechanical cutting tools over a torch for the big cuts?

Awesome stuff right there. Just came across a YT video yesterday about transforming a piece of railroad rail into an anvil. Cool stuff.

Torch would have affected the existing temper of the steel. Softening it somewhat especially near the cut itself. Best to do it mechanically if you can, unless you plan to re-heat treat it entirely.

Any idea what your finished weight is there?

My first anvil was a chunk of I-beam that I mounted at various times to various stumps. It worked but I found myself knocking the lag screws that held it to the stump loose pretty regularly.

I bought an NCTool anvil several years ago. I also bought their adjustable anvil stand which holds it securely and MIGHT also fit the track anvil Mirac has built here.

That stand. A good size log chain wrapped generously around the anvil and stand, and you would be in business.

I've got my eye on a couple logs down at the river that would be a good proportionate size and some thick 1/4 inch chain to wrap it with.
But yeah defiantly needs some weight .

The chain makes a huge difference. Without it my anvil and stand ring and resonate much more. Which is loud but it also dissipates energy that isn't going into the work piece. After I wrapped that big honking log chain around it, it felt and worked like a different anvil.
