If your doc is affiliated with Mission Health Care, ask for a PALLIATIVE CARE CONSULT. Even if he's not with Mission, ask for a Palliative Care consult anyway. Palliative Care is a specialist service that works WITH your docs to manage pain, symptoms, etc. They take a whole body/mind approach (not voodoo stuff) that focuses on comfort and dealing with chronic stuff. That leaves your doc focused on fixing what's wrong, the cause, while the PC staff focuses on keeping you sane and comfortable.
Don't let your doc get away with saying "they can't do anything"....most docs think they're god's gift and know everything. PC is a specialist service just like ortho or cardiology, oncology, etc. If you're in the Mission System, the PC service is top notch.
Don't be freaked out if the Palliative Care consult service is aligned with a Hospice service. Many of the care plans are similar, but Palliative Care is all about LIVING with issues, not planning for end of life.
