I spent a good part of an hour online this morning looking for powders and primers. It's really getting scary out there. BR-2 primers are not be be had. I was looking for some H4831 and it's gone too. I even checked the Hodgdon site and they didn't have any! Now with the communists getting ready to take over I'm at a loss. Is it time to sell out and take up golf? o_O

Not at all.

Having the capability to produce your own ammunition is commodity that you do not want to get rid of.

While components are scarce now, there are no guarantees they’ll always be in short supply and/or you may luck up and find what you need.

Mantain the ability...I believe it will eventually prove to be invaluable.

Yea, I guess you are all right. Besides, I hate golf. Bullets and brass seem to be available. But what to put inside that makes it go bang can be a challenge.

When Obama was re-elected and it was apparent the democrats were going for more gun control, we went through the same panic buying and shortages. After they were not able to push through more gun control (thank God we held the senate then) things started to calm back down and everything slowly became available again. I was just getting started reloading at the end of 2012, so I got to see all of this happen. I made sure I stocked up since then, and have enough supplies to keep me busy for a few years. As long as we hold the Senate, I think it will get better, but it may not happen for a year or more, JMHO.

I just wonder how local matches will survive in 2021......
Assuming im in the majority
Most are quickly running out of components and have enough to keep me going through the end of the year but aftee that????
Guess i will be shooting .22lr next year at rimfire matches or not shooting at all

I’ve only been into shooting for 15yr and reloading for 5yr, but that’s long enough to see the cyclical nature of the market. I think we all know by now, you should build up a 4yr+ supply so that the market turns don’t impact you.
When supply > demand, I buy buy buy. Late last year and into the beginning of COVID I was getting all kinds of local deals on reloading equipment and components. Right now, there are no “deals”.

I got into reloading right around that time as well and pretty much the exact same thing is happening now. I believe it took about a year for supply/demand to stabilize to the point where it became easier to buy what you needed, although at a higher price point, with prices going down gradually after that. Things will get back to normal again eventually, but you're probably going to have to be patient. When it does, don't get complacent and just buy the components you need now: Gradually build a stockpile that will last you at least a year if not two or three and rotate that out as you use it.

Went in Cabelas yesterday looking for a case lube pad and some sort of current reloading manual. Didn't have either.

So I bought a small tub of Unique lube and had to show I/D to buy that.

20 yr old kid running the register, asked for I/D, I asked him "Do you know what this is? Are you telling me I need identification to buy grease?".

He just shrugged his shoulders and pointed to his register monitor with the I/D required notification on it.

I almost left it there. I'm guessing anything from Hornady is flagged.

I would expect something like that to happen in California, but not here.

CCI primers are SLOWLY coming back, there's also some stuff coming in from Europe. I say this, they started coming back two weeks ago before the election. I'm not sure we will see anything from the domestic mfgs because they are busy with their own loaded ammo for the time being (my theory). If you don't have it by now, there's a good chance you won't get it for a long time

Powder seems to be hit or miss on the distributor side atleast.

I wont be surprised to see loaded prices get closer to $1/rd for 9mm here soon, unless Trumpy gets in

I guess this is betting............ If you wait until the prices come down, they may not. If you buy now when you can find it and the prices go up later you did good. My suggestion is to hedge your bets now and get what you can afford when you find it.

Where are you seeing CCI primers?

Get on all of these companies' websites for a start.................... Nowadays you have to stay on it every day or more than that. The stuff is out there but its like fishing, if you aren't there when the fish are you ain't gonna catchem.;)
Midway USA
Midsouth Shooter Supply
Aim Surplus
CDNN
Powder Valley
Natchez
J&G Sales
OK Webber
then do a gaggle search to find more specific listings.

Looks like I need to be a better hunter

thanks guys

It also pays to be nice to Fudds, they in time quit shooting leaving large inventories to share amongst their friends.

Anyone local selling panic price primers?
Id rather put cash into someone heres pocket vs gun broker people
Completely agree especially if you don’t have to pay the $35+ shipping cost. Check Facebook marketplace and Craigslist. You may notice a lot of “empty” gun cases for sale and once I’ve PMd the sellers most have a decent list of items to sell but I haven’t located any reloading supplies yet.

Ok guys. Here is the skinny on Primers. There are people with bots set up to auto buy from online retailers. They are then listing them on Gunbroker at scalped prices. I'm part of a discord server where when they pop in stock it sends an alert and link where to buy them. Small pistol primers and small rifle primers sell out in under a minute. I've been lucky and bought 4 batches of primers in 2 weeks. 1st order Powder valley, $67 for 1k small pistol (they have a limit of 1). 2nd order 4k small pistol primers (cci 500) from grafs for $160ish out the door.. Bass pro 4k CCI 500 for $160ish out the door and just last night 5k CCI 400 small rifle for $240 out the door from Midsouth shooter supply. Also, set up an app called distill.io for google chrome. You can set it up to scan for changes on websites at different intervals. I have it scanning for out of stock text on 5 different websites for primers.

Here is the link to the discord server: https://discord.gg/reloading

Reloading shop in Salisbury has Federal Large Pistol Primers, $33 I think.....no small primers. Seemed to have good supply of powder. Had some Hornady XTP 9mm bullets, forget the price but too much for my plinking.

I opened a box on the bottom shelf of a bench and found these primers I did not remember having. I suppose I am good for another couple of months as little as I have been able to shoot lately.
Hmmm... a couple of those boxes of small pistol primers look damaged. They could be hazardous, you know. I have a primer disposal facility. Let me know if I can help. ;)

I paid $23.99 for 1000 CCI Large Pistol Primers this week at Sportsman's Warehouse.... I can't seem to find small pistol primers at a REASONABLE price....There are plenty of bullets and powder to be found, it just takes a little effort. Today I was in Sportsman's Warehouse and the shelves were full of powder and plenty of bullets.... Primers are there, they just go fast.

Thanks. I appreciate the help. I did load up several that seem to work fine. I would hate to give away any that might be dangerous because they might find their way to some unsuspecting loader who can not tell the difference between a good primer and a dangerous one. I did throw several boxes of primers on a burn pile several years ago because they were suspect. That was fun. I also put several hundred under a pile of scrap powder, lit the powder, and hid behind a tree. That was even more fun.

I have been buying 124Gr 9mm from RMR. They are on back order but you get them in 7-10 weeks. I order some when that order shows up I order again so I have stuff coming to me in the pipeline. I have also been getting 45 ACP from Precision Delta. Prices have gone up but nothing like load ammo. I have a good stash of primers and powder. I need to get 8 more LBs of powder to even out with the number of primers I have on hand. Then I just need to keep buying bullets. Should be good for about 5+ years + the factory ammo I have as well.

A lot depends on where you live. Right now the best availability is small local stores and then big box retailers like Sportsman's Warehouse or Academy. Unfortunately for me I am 1 hour away from both. LP is much easier to find than SPP right now. The last SPP I saw were $10 for 100. Good Score!

There is plenty of powder in my area... I'll eventually find someone that wants to trade some SPP for LPP..... SPP can be found but I'm not paying $75-$100 per thousand...

SPP won’t get better until the 9mm ammo situation gets better. Every primer manufacturer can make more money currently selling ammo vs primers.

Make less than $.01 per primer or make $.20 on ammo is a no brained.
