...aside from the expense of shooting it, any downside for using such a cartridge for precision shooting only (and not hunting)?

Some ranges and competitions do not allow magnum calibers. 300 win mag may be the limit at some but others it's a tad too large.

Along with what was stated above you get less barrel life. Exactly how much less depends on several factors. Can't give an exact round count as your milage will vary. Depending on how hot you are loading your ammo, how often you really heat the barrel up with large round count volleys and what you consider to be acceptable accuracy etc. In my opinion your acceptable accuracy will be the biggest factor. Example you may have a rifle that shoots 1/2 MOA or better, after around 1500 rounds it may start opening up but still shoots around 1 MOA. You may be perfectly good with that and you can keep shooting but someone else may think that its time to re-barrel so that they can keep shooting 1/2 MOA.

I should have said that barrels should be thought of as disposable in precision shooting. Think of it like brakes on a car. Sooner or later they just wear out and have to be replaced. Usually its not the entire barrel. The throat is what usually erodes first and causes accuracy issues. With the right barrel length and a good rifle smith you can have them cut down the barrel on the chamber end and re-chamber it and you're right back in business. That is a cheaper option but you will loose some FPS off the bullet velocity from the new shorter barrel length.

Are you wanting to shoot competition or home-type range shooting? Better consider recoil in your calculations.Butner does not allow 300mags anymore. I can tell you that laying behind a 300 mag for 75 rounds in a day will give you pause to reflect on why you did it.................

That long range guy in YouTube, Tiberosaurus, didn't give the .300 win mag much love at all. Might find the hardware choosing vid and hear his thoughts on the subject.

If I had it to do over again and wanted a 300mag I'd go with a 300WSM, hard to find the brass. No belted case issues, somewhat better performance. I built a 300mag M24 and wouldn't take anything for it, and have a Mod70 300mag hunting rifle. It is a great round for it's intended use. You have to work at it to make it precision for competition.

I think TSConver has been shooting 300WG at length suppressed and says the recoil is not an issue. Check with him though. He would know. I will be getting one when all other expenses are caught up.

Will depend on the load, the gun weight and the round. Recoil is not an issue with a suppressor. However muzzle bounce can be. A good break not only reduces recoil but also keeps you on target.

i have shot 100 rd marches with mine and a good break or can really softens it up.
