We currently live in Lake Wylie, SC but my wife and I are at our wits end living in what we consider the sprawling Charlotte metro. We are exploring moving west, preferably within 45 minutes of Greenville, SC but with our health insurance carrier we need to stay in SC.
Recommendation for a small quaint town will be optimal. Thank you.

Stay out of Spartanburg, the area north of Greenville to north of Spartanburg is nice.
South of Greenville is also nice.

Greenville County is starting to look a lot like the surrounding Charlotte areas. You can't find an open field without a subdivision going up next to it. Fountain Inn, Simpsonville, etc.

If you can go a little bit further east, I really liked the Gaffney/Boiling Springs area. My understanding is that its far enough away from the cities that it hasn't suffered a similar fate just yet, but is civilized enough that you aren't spending half a day driving to a grocery store or WalMart.

I grew up in south Charlotte, water skiing on Lake Wylie.
I lived in the upstate of SC for 8 years, then Wake county for the past 35.

If I left here, I would not move back to Charlotte. But I absolutely would move back to the greater Greenville Area. South of town, or ideally somewhere north of town.

Born in the Upstate and I would move back in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. We moved to NC in the mid 80's because of my dad's job. Will be selling my Grandma's house off East North St in a nice little neighborhood in the next 3-6 months if interested. I was thinking about trying to figure out how to keep it as a rental but I just can't because of the memories.

I've spent a small amount of time in Laurens, SC during/after events at The Sawmill. Seems like a nice plac.

@Snal~ ??

Are you looking to live within a small town or a little bit more rural, i.e., outside of town? Is your definition of quaint 300 or 3,000?

My advice would be to take several day trips out Highway 11 way and the roads that go off it. Better yet, take a few weekend trips. There are a lot of places that would fit the bill. Staying east of the lakes keeps you within that 45 minutes, but if you stray further out, you just might find something that makes being an hour or so away worth it.

Come to Cheraw.

Your Lake Wylie money will get you your own lake.

That's a good thing because there ain't shit else to do here.

Welcome!

Or they could look at the Heath Springs area.
We do have Lake Wateree near by, but not much else.

more like 3000 but don’t care about good schools, we passed that point, just an old geezer and his wife.

I really liked the Gaffney

They’re currently building 1,600 houses behind the Yellar Mall as we speak, and 4 or 5 of those big box warehouse things. There’s some folks gonna be in for culture shock when they buy there, and then meet the rednecks and crackheads in Gaffney.

I travel the whole state weekly for work. I’ve lived here my entire life. Like you, I live now in Western York County, but not Lake Wylie. As you probably know, Clover is about to add another High School, so that tells you the lid has came off and the development is rampant. If you’re put off by what you see here, honestly it‘s not much better anywhere along the I85 corridor in SC. Honestly, I would take a hard look at Greenwood SC. Stuffed full of old money, hell, it even has a Cracker Barrel, and ain’t no where near an interstate. Greenwood or Abbeville are awesome towns, Abbeville is quite smaller, while Greenwood is a nice size with a lot to offer, but not overgrown. Anywhere within a 40 mile radius of Greenville, and I think you’ll be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

We absolutely love Laurens county. We're about as far west as you can get. Lots of farmland and such, but 15 minutes to town, or 20 minutes to Simpsonville and
30 minutes to Greenville. Prices are still reasonable here, but not quite as much of a bargain as it was just a few years ago. Eight years ago we bought an acre with 200' waterfront on a small 184 acre lake for $16k and spent 6 years building our little retirement home.....2 years ago we bought another lot across the street from the lake...2.75 acres for $17k! Only thing we had to get used to (being from Asheville) was being 15 miles from anything. But, Simpsonville is great because once we get there EVERYTHING is right there. Greenwood is 20 minutes south, and also has everything, just more spread out than Simpsonville.
Simpsonville is also quite nice, and more upscale, but growing fast. Still some nice new homes on postage stamp lots starting in the mid/low 200's.
