I have to replace the blades on my John Deere D130.
curious what brands you guys are using, likes dislikes?
Been told 8TEN & Gator blades are good.

I have been using chinamart medium-lift mulching blades last few years and the suck.

I have gator blades on my zero turn and they are 6 or 7 years old. Holding up well.

Can you sharpen them?
normally I do sharpen them at the beginning of every summer. But the sewer washout pipe in the front yard must’ve heaved up over the winter or something because when I went over it this year the blades hit it. Sheered off the mouth of the pipe and the lid. Too many gouges in the blades. 6 yrs and they were original to the lawnmower. Definitely need replacing

Ouch! That sucks. I would go with middle priced blades at lowes or find some online comparable

Don’t know the answer but I know I like lifting blades for even cuts. Watching this thread.

Gator blades were my go to on an Arens rider I used at my last place.

I use Oregon gator blades - several companies have copied but they are the originals. Good steel you can sharpen / re profile the edge quite a few times before they are trash

Does anyone have a use for old worn out lawn mower blades? I have quite a few that I have collected over the years and need to do something with them.

Wonder if they would make good knife material?

8Ten is almost all imported from China. The blades are pretty soft and seem to wear quickly - not everything is bad that’s imported , but of the 2 you mentioned I would go original Gator by Oregon

Some are, some aren't. No way to really tell without test quenching a piece. Many are 5160 which is a good blade steel.
The blades for commercial mowers tend to be better steel. The basic 21” walk behind mower blades are softer for a reason - engineers spec them softer because the blade on that application bolts right to the crankshaft of the engine - they are designed to be soft so if you hit something the blade or flywheel key gives - and the crankshaft of the engine doesn’t bend. If you have a really good solid blade tempered well - the blade wont give and the crankshaft will bend
